junrahmat,

That is why they are so set on the IP programme. They think they are not getting the best students, and so are not producing the best O level results. In fact, they are willing to sacrifice everything for IP. My son told me that his literature teacher did not come to class for one week before the term 3 tests because she had to prepare for the Literature IP syllabus. They had a replacement teacher for literature that week instead!!

Oh dear! How can they do that? This is really unfair for the boys. The cop last year was 241, which I feel, they are still getting better students than other band 2 schools with cop around 235. The school needs to do something to value add! (Plus the school fees is not cheap, so they better do something!)

they are still value adding, hence they are awarded the sustained academic value added award in comparison to some of the other band 1 and 2 schools, also their cut off for affiliation for the 2010 O Level cohort is 230.

      http://www.moe.gov.sg/media/press/files/2011/moa-annex-f1.pdf
emoh,
I didn't realise their cop has come down by so much. i recall previous years, that cop for affiliated schools were around 238. they even announced to parents of affliated schools that they intend to keep it at around 238.

With this drop, I suppose that's why they were telling us in the meeting to discuss the merits of an IP programme that the best of the students from the affiliated schools are not joining SJI and the dual track IP/O level will hopefully address this decline. They have been trying ways and means to attract the top students from their affiliated schools. My friend's son who was from an affiliated primary school was offered a scholarship by SJI, but still decided to join another IP school.

Good luck to SJI. I hope they achieve their ambition but still don't forget their existing non-IP students.

        Dnls_mum,

I think you misunderstood emoh. The PSLE cut-off of 230 was back in 2007 as this was the cohort sitting for O levels in 2010.

Since 2009, the cut-off for affiliated schools has increased to 238. So, we may see an improvement in O level scores in the years to come. To me, the value-add award is more important.

          Musette,

Thank you for pointing this out. I agree with you that being a valued added school is more important/meaningful than being a school that produce good results. My concern is whether SJI will still be such a school or will move towards elitism with the introduction of its IP programme. Will resources be redirected to the IP programme to the detriment of non-IP students. Unfortunately, present experience is not encouraging.

The value added achievements of SJI were achieved under the watch of the previous principal with different objectives and attitude as the current one who is brought in to set up the IP programme. The current principal's achievements are yet to be seen. But as a parent with a child in SJI, I sincerely hope that SJI will continue to be a valued added school. I just hope that its IP ambitions will not cause it to forget its current and future batch of non-IP students. As a catholic, it is also my sincere wish that SJI will be a school for all students and not just the elite, as advocated by our catholic values.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I was one of those parents invited to attend a meeting with the committee and OBA to discuss the merits of introducing an IP programme for SJI. I support the dual track initiative so that SJI can pursue excellence but not forget its mission to provide education for ordinary people. We were given the assurance that non-IP students will not be neglected, and SJI will not pursue an elitist model. I am just disappointed that the current execution of this initiative by the current principal does not gel will the assurances given by the committee and the OBA, then.

Can anyone enlighten me about the soft launch of IB programme in 2012 as mentioned by SJI, even though the official date to offer IB is 2013. Does it mean that if my son entered Year 1 next year under scholarship, he wld be placed under the IB programme and wld proceed to Year 2 for the IB in 2013?

Why don't you write to the school to ask....at least you will get an official response that u can hopefully hold them to.
