NatTif Mummy:
Hi NatTifMummy, which school does your dd prefer? I think I remember you saying that a number of your dd's seniors are at NYGH so she would feel very comfortable there.I am also facing the same problem. My GEP dd is very strong in both her languages, weaker in Math & Science. She is bold, out spoken & active.
During the open hse, we find the NYGH gals are shyer, she describes the principal as \"a kind grandmother\" and the Bicultural Programme seems to suit her.
RGS gals are more \"cheerful & vibrant\", seems to suit her character better.
As I understanding RGS has a \"Chinese Special Programme\", anyone know of any student in this programme? -

Hi Turquoise, at first she wants to go NYGH, then pp starts telling her she should go RGS, cos of her out going character. Even her senior in NYGH told her to go RGS, now she is lost. I have not actually discuss this issue with her as I do not want to add stress on her. Poor thing, she seems so tired today, and is sleeping now.
I have friends whose dd are in either NYGH or RGS, seems that all are happy with where they are. My main concern is to let her go to a school which can stretch her ability to the fullest, that is her strength and interest in languages. -
NatTif Mummy:
I've heard good things about both schools too. People have also told me that girls who are outspoken, go-getters, competitive and independent learners will do well at RGS. I wonder if RGS and NYGH will hold open houses after PSLE. Might help girls who are undecided to make up their minds.turquoise:

All the while I have a preference for NYGH due to shorter travelling time.I have in a way indicated to my gal and it seems to be okay. It is only when we received RGS comfirmation letter that I sense something amiss. When I passed her the letter she did not read it immediately .I asked her why, she said something like \" read or didn`t read, also the same\".At that moment, I realised her choice and told her, the choice is not fixed yet and we will discussed after her PSLE. After our discussion, knowing the pro and con, whatever is her choice will be accepted.
Wishing all parents in the forum the best for their children PSLE. -
In talking with a few mums, I’ve learnt that a few of them prefer their girls to go NYGH but the girls themselves prefer RGS. The reasons given by the mums are because NYGH is strongly rooted in tradition and culture, and that the teachers there are more nurturing. 2ct and NatTifMummy, have you heard the same?

What I heard abt NYGH is that the girls are gradually guided to the deep end of the pool over the 4 years while in RGS there are thrown into the deep end of the pool from day 1. -
Dharma:
Ah yes, I've heard a similar analogy too.turquoise:

How does your dd find RGS, Dharma?

NatTif Mummy:
That was what I observed during last year's open house, as my daughter is also bold, out-spoken and indepedent. So I felt that RGS would be the better school for her. She also affected by her classmates choices, because 6~7 of her classmates goes in RGS, and only 1 or 2 go to NYGH. Probably we stay in the north, both of the schools are very far..[

As for the 'Chinese Special Programme', it is for those non-chinese pupils, something like 3rd language. there are higher chinese and normal chinese for them to choose. -

My daughter is in RGS sec1 this year. She was struggling in the first few months, mainly because of too many activities to join and many projects to complete, she was from a mainstream school, so not used to this way of teaching. I felt that the teachers are not gradually guiding them to the deep pool, but they are definitely watching out for the girls. My girl's form teacher actually took the initiative to discuss with me my daughter's issue when she hasn't handed in her assignment in time for a few times. and updated me my girl's progress by email before my girl went back 'on track'. My girl now is very happy in school and coping her CCA and study well.
Personally I prefer this 'throwing in the water' way than gradually guiding. It's like teaching swimming, throwing in the water and let the kids try, watch out for them, help when it is really needed is more effective. -
Thanks for sharing, chengsmummy. It’s good to hear from someone with experience. Do the teachers teach sufficiently or do you find that tuition is necessary?
