Nanyang Girls' High School [*IP]

In talking with a few mums, Iβve learnt that a few of them prefer their girls to go NYGH but the girls themselves prefer RGS. The reasons given by the mums are because NYGH is strongly rooted in tradition and culture, and that the teachers there are more nurturing. 2ct and NatTifMummy, have you heard the same?

What I heard abt NYGH is that the girls are gradually guided to the deep end of the pool over the 4 years while in RGS there are thrown into the deep end of the pool from day 1. -

Ah yes, I've heard a similar analogy too.turquoise:

How does your dd find RGS, Dharma?

NatTif Mummy:
That was what I observed during last year's open house, as my daughter is also bold, out-spoken and indepedent. So I felt that RGS would be the better school for her. She also affected by her classmates choices, because 6~7 of her classmates goes in RGS, and only 1 or 2 go to NYGH. Probably we stay in the north, both of the schools are very far..[
I am also facing the same problem. My GEP dd is very strong in both her languages, weaker in Math & Science. She is bold, out spoken & active.
During the open hse, we find the NYGH gals are shyer, she describes the principal as \"a kind grandmother\" and the Bicultural Programme seems to suit her.
RGS gals are more \"cheerful & vibrant\", seems to suit her character better.
As I understanding RGS has a \"Chinese Special Programme\", anyone know of any student in this programme?
As for the 'Chinese Special Programme', it is for those non-chinese pupils, something like 3rd language. there are higher chinese and normal chinese for them to choose. -

My daughter is in RGS sec1 this year. She was struggling in the first few months, mainly because of too many activities to join and many projects to complete, she was from a mainstream school, so not used to this way of teaching. I felt that the teachers are not gradually guiding them to the deep pool, but they are definitely watching out for the girls. My girl's form teacher actually took the initiative to discuss with me my daughter's issue when she hasn't handed in her assignment in time for a few times. and updated me my girl's progress by email before my girl went back 'on track'. My girl now is very happy in school and coping her CCA and study well.
Personally I prefer this 'throwing in the water' way than gradually guiding. It's like teaching swimming, throwing in the water and let the kids try, watch out for them, help when it is really needed is more effective. -
Thanks for sharing, chengsmummy. Itβs good to hear from someone with experience. Do the teachers teach sufficiently or do you find that tuition is necessary?

Heard something like that, but each experience is slightly different.
A friend of mine has 2 gals who are from the mainstream in NYGH and is very satisfied with the school. Both her daughters enjoy the school activities very much and have done very well. The eldest is currently pursuing a medical course in local U.But from others, whether true or not there are remark like \"this money, that also money\"
I am very impressed with the RGS students during the open house. The students seems to enjoy very much. They are very confident and independent. The student tour leaders communicate fantastically with smoothness and exude great confidence.
A friend who has 2 daughters, one from GEP and 1 from mainstream commented about lack of nurturing. The one from GEP has coped well but the mainstream gal somehow just drifted along.Guess each experience is different .Glad to know that your daughter has overcome the initial obstacle and is now enjoying her study there.
In an activity grouping of 4 girls (all from different school),inclusive of my gal, \"3 has already make the decision to join RGS\" Only my gal havent decided yet.
Sometimes it is hard to make a decision as there are different point of view, egType A girl should for Type A school,Type A girl should choose type B school, to be more balanced,Type of school more important than travelling distance, vice versa , nurturing the strength of the student ..etc
After PSLE, if my daughter and I still couldn`t make up our mind, we might just consider tossing a coin. -
hi 2ct,
what's keeping you up? anxious abt the psle or a regular insomniac like me?
tossing a coin to determine the next 6 years seems so extreme. You must be joking or tired.
May I suggest you try a point system and for each criteria (you and yr girl decide them), award a point of 1 or 2 and then you sum up the points..Something like vendor selection eh? -

The reason for tossing a coin is becoz both are good school, and at times point system don`t really work due to different weightage and unknown factors.Sometmes is the head versus the heart. -
Tossing a coin and leave it to fate/God? Hmmm. to each his/her own, I guess. Hope both of you can come to an agreed choice. :celebrate:
