In talking with a few mums, I've learnt that a few of them prefer their girls to go NYGH but the girls themselves prefer RGS. The reasons given by the mums are because NYGH is strongly rooted in tradition and culture, and that the teachers there are more nurturing. 2ct and NatTifMummy, have you heard the same?

Heard something like that, but each experience is slightly different.
A friend of mine has 2 gals who are from the mainstream in NYGH and is very satisfied with the school.Both her daughters enjoy the school activities very much and have done very well.The eldest is currently pursuing a medical course in local U.But from others, whether true or not there are remark like \"this money, that also money\"

I am very impressed with the RGS students during the open house.The students seems to enjoy very much.They are very confident and independent.The student tour leaders communicate fantastically with smoothness and exude great confidence.

A friend who has 2 daughters, one from GEP and 1 from mainstream commented about lack of nurturing.The one from GEP has coped well but the mainstream gal somehow just drifted along.Guess each experience is different .Glad to know that your daughter has overcome the initial obstacle and is now enjoying her study there.

In an activity grouping of 4 girls (all from different school),inclusive of my gal, \"3 has already make the decision to join RGS\" Only my gal havent decided yet.

Sometimes it is hard to make a decision as there are different point of view, egType A girl should for Type A school,Type A girl should choose type B school, to be more balanced,Type of school more important than travelling distance, vice versa , nurturing the strength of the student ..etc

After PSLE, if my daughter and I still couldn`t make up our mind, we might just consider tossing a coin.

My dd's only going to Sec 1 next year. I think you were referring to chengsmummy's dd when you talked about facing obstacles at RGS.

Please don't resort to tossing a coin. I'm sure your decision will become clearer in the days to come. Good luck with the decision.

by now, I don't find the tuition is needed, my dd didn't have any tuition in her 6years' primary school time too.
I also find that it is difficult for her to squeeze time for the tuition unless it is during the school holiday time. She normally returns home after 6pm every weekday, because of the CCA , 3rd language and other activities and the long travelling time.

Just to share, two good friends went to apply for HJC.A likes VJC and B likes HJC.

Eventually A went to HJC and B went to VJC.They want to be together,but A was discourage by the principal in hjc to transfer.Now ,A is happy there and two of them are still good friends.

A mummy very happy cos she has always wanted A to go hjc but respect her gal choice .

I guess everything is fated.

Share my view on RGS and others.


General perception is that NY is more traditional. The school may be traditional but the girls may not be. Sorry to anger some of the NY mums here. NY has many rich students, clever but more laid back. Because of the exposure and comfort level at home, inevitably they are more relax and vain. Didn't know quite a number of students are like that until hearing from close friends whose daughters were there. Used to think that they are a nerdy lot.


To enter RJ through DSA or 'O' level later is much much much more harder than through PSLE.

Another conisderation of which school to choose would be whether there is a preference for either RI (JC) or Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) to pursue junior college later.


My dd is in Sec 2 at RGS and has classmates who were previously from NYPS and chose RGS instead of NYGH based on that consideration, and similarly there were RGPS girls who went to NYGH cos they had a preference for HCI - which some pp feel has a strong humanities curriculum.

My personal view is that both schools has its respective merits, and though there is a perception that RGS girls are more independent and vocal, the same can be said for girls I have met from NYGH - each school does bring out the best in each of the girls.

Having said that, my dd and her friends absolutely love RGS - the school spirit is very strong, and in fact they are so eager to "promote" the school, that they look forward to being involved in open house sessions etc so that they are able to share & showcase the school and they also often return to their respective primary schools to share with their juniors how wonderful RGS is!

Life in RGS is indeed a very busy one, all sorts of projects, programs to take part in, CCAs etc etc. But the girls all seem to adapt well, and as my dd would say when asked if it’s stressful, "it’s not that bad, somehow everyone will manage." She also says, "don’t worry, you would not be the only one rushing to finish homework, projects etc, there are others who are all in the same boat, so it’s not only you alone!" All I can say is that the girls all work very hard but they also know how to enjoy themselves too - and with end of year exams over by early next week, many of them already have made plans on what they are going to be doing etc. So not a case of "all work and no play!"

Although I still often feel stressed just to see dd busily juggling her schedule, I am at the same time happy to know that she is fully enjoying her school life, and tell myself that I can only be as supportive as possible to help her manage.

So for all who are undecided on which school to choose, be comforted that your dds will all somehow manage well (esp with parental support)and I feel RGS is not that more stressful, than say NYGH.

She seems to be happy there, although life is hectic and fast paced. Lots of projects, assignments, competitions, tests. It was a new learning environment last year as RGS conducts its own SBGE program. You know she was from the main stream so took a while to adjust and guess she’s got used the system now.

CCAs ….RGS places a lot importance on this. Normally 2~3 times a week and practices becomes more frequent before competitions (SYF) or even performances. Agree with chengsmummy about the long hours in school but fortunately mine has 2 long days for CCA during weekdays but she goes back on Sat for CCA and SMO training (from 8am to 1pm). I think … overall the exposure is great. She has grown to become more confident in the last 1 year.

Teaching ….I’m not so sure… probably depends on individual teachers. I always tell her not to depend on teachers and do her own learning and she is beginning to understand now. Donno whether tuition is necessary ….. guess it depends on the kids and more importantly u need to find the time for it.

Thanks for sharing, CMF. It's true that the RGS girls love to go back to their primary schools to share about how wonderful RGS is. My dd's school has had many visits from her seniors. I've always wondered how they manage to take time off secondary school to visit their primary schools in the morning.

Yes, going back to visit their respective primary school is indeed a highlight for many of the RGS girls! Heard from dd that on the recent Teachers’ Day - throngs of them from RGS and the various secondary schools all congregated at their primary schools. It seems to be an annual pilgrimage that they all make on Teachers’ Day, and also on other days when there are either half days or no classes for secondary schools - they will try to make a trip to their primary schools then too!

Understand that some of them actually ask for permission sometimes to leave early so that they can make such visits! It is rather heartwarming to know that the secondary students all still keep such strong ties with their primary schools.

Thanks, Dharma. Great to hear that your dd loves RGS and has settled in nicely. Yes, my dd's choosing RGS. It is a more suitable school for her based on her personality and subject strengths. In fact, when we first received the DSA confirmation from NYGH, many friends and relatives advised us that NYGH wasn't the right school for her. I agree, although NYGH is a very good school. At the end of the day, it really depends on which school the child will be happier and more comfortable in. I believe most of her classmates are choosing RGS as well.
