      Superbugs:
why you have made the decision or why you made the decision?
Hi Superbugs. Could you provide more information about your question?

      Normally, we would say:
Why did you make that decision?

      We could also say:
Why have you made the decision to listen to Ridcully rather than other teachers?

I need advice on how to answer a comprehension question.

For a question as follow :
Who do you think Mr Tan was?

Can it be answered as :-
            Mr Tan was Jennifer's father.

Or must it be answered as : -
I think Mr Tan was Jennifer's father.

            Thank you in advance.

                Hi

                Good Morning.

I am not an expert but would like to try to answer your question.

From Longman Mastering English Grammar and Vocabulary, neither takes a singular verb.

From Practical English Usage, the verb can be singular or (in an informal style) plural.

Please refer to the reply from this link.

                http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/learningenglish/grammar/learnit/learnitv113.shtml

Also, you may wish to refer to rule 11 of this link.

                http://www.grammarbook.com/grammar/subjectVerbAgree.asp

So, I am more inclined to go for option (2).

                Best wishes

Hi Tianzhu, no worries, I would appreciate any form of help. DS had the same answer as you but the answer sheet says (3). I had the same opinion as the above for the term 'neither' so just want to double check before declaring the answer sheet wrong... ๐Ÿ˜‰

                        Hi

My boy has the habit of placing the nouns in the main clause and the pronouns in the subordinate clause when dealing with such questions.

Before she goes to bed, Flora checks that all the windows and doors are closed.

Whenever she sees her favourite toy, my baby sister will clap her hands.

Please take a look this book, English as it is Broken, Book 2, pg 55/56.

                        http://www.popular.com.sg/jsp/product/product_detail.jsp?vca001=207&vpd001=84041

It helps to explain the position of pronouns in main and subordinate clauses.

My understanding after reading this book, the position of the pronouns does not matter, much depends on the context.

Unfortunately, I donโ€™t have a copy of the book now and is unable to give you the actual paragraph.

                        Best wishes
