How to work with children with low attention span

Oppsgal:
mine is not gifted kid, so why would i want an IQ test?
Got any IQ test included?
http://www.adhdtesting.org/
Have read the article on ADHD. :yikes: So if not an accurate test then why do the test?
My kid definitely active when comes to playing.
But for class sit down and learn things my kid will run all over the childcare centre or sit a few seconds then stand up disturb classmates.
Memory very good though. Teacher praise kid smart...but need help in express anger. Recommend us to bring kid to test.
So wonder if test positive then drug my kid with medicine is good in long run?
mine is a regular kid and since teacher and principal approached us to seek assessment, we did approach polyclinic for referral. and worked closely with his N2 teachers. good that his kindy teachers now somewhat know how to manage him (by asking him to help around in class), so my worry now is when he goes on to P1.
no medication is good in the long run and no one can make you give your kid medication for ADHD. an assessment is only an assessment and maybe tips/discussion with specialist to learn more about your kid's behaviour.
my boy also has selfcontrol issues/impatient etc. -

Not much 'rectify' for my kid. The teachers follow my instruction of punishment to ask my kid stand a corner. They only phone to tell me that my kid do this and that to the classmates.Hi, I've been following this topic. My 5yr old son is also very active, good memory and a happy child. CC teacher often complain the usual short attention span, disturb friends, refuse to take afternoon nap. As often as I have heard from feedbacks from his (young) friends, teacher always punish him in a corner once he is naughty i.e. refuse to sit down for lesson.
I gather that most of our kids here display about the same behaviour as listed above.
How does your CC teacher 'rectify' such behaviour for your kid?
One day, I told the assistant form teacher who called me to please go punish my kid to do the standing one corner. She said no need :? I insist is a must. -

:? Gifted then can do IQ test? I am thinking of getting IQ test to see if my kid got high IQ, and if the class activity too boring for my kid so cannot sit still.

i thought parents usually test their kids' IQ are so that they can skip/demote (high/low) levels etc... will your kid's CC allow? i did not do IQ test cos my kid is a regular kid ah.

our behavioural specialist conducted an assessment ('interview' kid and also questionaire to parent and teacher) which included developmental/motorskills development, 'academic' level, emotional and social development. their concern is whether kid is developing within their age-group range, not very much on whether kid is developing beyond their range. the assessment will give you a gauge on where your kid stand among majority of his age-group and the specialist focused and talked to me about those that he scored poorly in (sensitivity issues, self control issues etc). -

Thank you for the information.

My kid sure needs to improve self control. A little bit, my kid will go do the tantrum -hit head or start throwing things around when cannot do the way things go.
But then questionnaires are not 100% accurate, only can based on intuition. But as long no prescription of medicine is good. I definitely do not want my kid to eat medicine every other days based on inaccurate tests.
So did the doctor recommend any remedy on problems? Husband wonder if this to and fro to do test is it worth the time? -
Oppsgal:
if you strongly feel that your kid is ok, then you may want to skip the assessment if you think it is not worth the time and money.

my hubs did not want to send my kid for assessment but i insisted. it is a peace of mind for me (and since ds2 is somewhat 'different' from his friends and ds1; he had eyecontact issues when younger). i do not take the specialist words 100%, but he gave me insights into stuff through the sessions which mainly involves Q&A. there is no remedy on problems, but we get to understand what to expect from the kid and try to work from there. -

Hi…my 4 years old boy have very short attention span…he cannot sit down to complete his writing and CC teacher always complain his mind is wondering around during lessons and even when the teacher hand held him to do writing he will not be looking at his work and looking elsewhere…Most of the time he gets punished by not being able to go playground when he does not finish his writing.
I am not sure if he is absorbing in school even though he is wondering but at times when we test him…he is able to get the answer right but sometimes he will get it wrong ( not sure if he does it on purpose)…
Are these signs of ADD? Should I bring him to see any specialist or will this situation improve over time? -

Hi Sharkkie, my younger boy used to be the same till I send him to children yoga classes. The classes teaches him in a fun and interactive way which helps in lengthening his attention span. Now he is almost 7 years and I am glad he has improved tremendously on his ability to focus.Hi...my 4 years old boy have very short attention span...he cannot sit down to complete his writing and CC teacher always complain his mind is wondering around during lessons and even when the teacher hand held him to do writing he will not be looking at his work and looking elsewhere...Most of the time he gets punished by not being able to go playground when he does not finish his writing.
