Community Centre i went to said official

entry age is 7 years old. In Primary schs
that offer taekwondo as CCA, the students
can take from P1. More to running training
and exercise regime for P1 i find.. My DD2
being a tom boy is quite interested.. So we
will see how. She can already do karate
          without the proper training.. πŸ˜›

Lets see if she needs to add taekwondo to
what she is already capable of doing now. 😐

Mummies, you can get more info here http://www.stf.sg/

My children (1 boy & 1 girl) started learning TKD at 9/10 yrs old and there are some children in their group who started at 4-5 yrs old. Some are there for the fun, some to learn some strokes for self-defence and some gradually progress into competitive sparring.

For beginner sparring, you do not get blue black that easily because (most) children do not know how to \"focus\" their strength or execute the right kicks. They are also required to wear protective arm and calf guards. For competitive sparring, they will usually know how to block kicks and they will also be required to wear additional gears for their upper torso, head and mouth.

However as in any other sports, there are bound to be accidents although the earlier TKD incident could have been avoided. Parents must be mentally prepared for it. My kids have been mildly injured before and I think there's a lesson learnt for them for every injury suffered. πŸ˜“

The coach at the RC near my place told me 5yo is the minimum age he accepts.

Apparently for silat, can start at 3yo.

For girls, I think starting anytime from 6-7yo onwards would be good. Let them learn for self-defence.

think most kid level martial art grp are not into competitive contact sparring until they are much older.

My kid’s karate club takes in 4~5 yo AFAIK.

Those of you who wish to start your kids younger than 5 years old can consider this Korean academy.

                    http://www.tkd.com.sg/

Brought DS1 (3+) to a trial class and find their facilities and coaches quite good. Too bad DS1 did not want to sign up for lessons. The fees are quite reasonable too for 2x weekly. The people there are quite friendly and it's easy to arrange a free trial class.

p/s mummies - The male coach is very good-looking. Looks like Korean star πŸ˜„
