Eventhough the piano teacher can inspire my elder gal but she only sees her once a week, for 45mins. How much can the teacher do?

For me, I create opportunity for my gal to play & learn at the same time. She is the one who is responsible to teach her sister for her JMC pieces. She is playing for a childcare centre during sch holiday and she is also the music teacher for my younger gal’s playgroup every alternate week. The playgroup is actually my friend’s daughters (4 & 6yo) & my younger gal. We (she & me) will sit down & plan what song to teach the gals & she will be the one playing the piano & teaching them to sing. Evening after dinner, my hb & I will sit in the couch, the elder one will play the piano & the younger one will show us her ballet moves. We do karaoke singing with her live performance too. She is the official entertainer for our family gathering. She plays the piano while the uncles & aunties enjoying the music with a after dinner drink. The applause from her uncles & aunties are the best encouragement & motivation. My younger gal just learned how to play with both hands and she is very excited as she prepares the song that she is going to play in our next family dinner gathering.

mumwgals, I'm impressed. It sounds like you have created a great environment to motivate your children.

Chief, glad that you are impressed ; P.

Seriously, there is nothing wrong in taking an accelerating path to learning music and it is definitely alright for those who decided to go slow. The child just need an external factor to keep their spirit high. So far, I would say that through taking up playing piano/learning music, my gal has learned much more than just the musical terminology & running her fingers through the piano keys. She learned the beautiful character of Perseverance. She experienced the little true meaning of commitment, hard work, patience & endurance. sorry, I’m off topic ; P

Totally agree. If all parents think this way, we piano teachers will have a much easier job 😄

Actually mostly learning takes place at home. So if parents are there to help, the child can really progress very much faster. Also with parents involvement, it will definately motivate the child much much further.

ChiefKiasu - maybe you could consider steering your kid towards another music instrument since he has perfect pitch and piano background. More uncommon things like the French Horn or Clarinet would be cool…

I played the clarinet for 6 years... not by choice, but because that's the only instrument I can make some sound out of in the school band. As you said, it is uncommon. I felt like an old man everytime I played it, and the huge lump I get on my right thumb from having the entire weight of the instrument resting on it makes an interesting conversation piece.

Chief, you should share \"old man\" clarinet stories with sashimi.

Besides clarinet, isn't percussion even easier to make sounds with. So how come you ended up with clarinet and I with percussion? :?

Erm...no offence, but i do know that some schools select percussionist based on their looks and pose cos they are the ones that literally stands out from any band performance.
i guess i wasn't consider a good-looker too (i was way underweight ) and was transferred to play the clarinet after the first year. 😢

off topic, but chiefKS...you really can assemble a KSP-band ensemble!

You skinny then, too? Before I became what I am now, I was like a bamboo too. Maybe they only choose skinny people as clarinetists. It makes sense, though. Can you imagine yourself marching while lugging a baritone? I could just fall in and get lost inside.

I was never good at the clarinet, though. Took me 3 months before I could reach that high C. But the grossest thing was how after every practice, we had to pull out the mouthpiece to flick out all the evidence of our hardwork 😛 . Nothing compared to the amount of saliva the French horn guy can pour out, though :!:
