Choosing and Evaluating Primary Schools

Hi all,
My DS will be registering for P1 next year. We are aiming for Nan Chiau Pri Sch as we are staying within 1km. Being a SHHK member since last year, I’m wondering what is my chances of getting into this school. I would greatly appreciate any feedbacks of the school. Thank you. -

Are you coming close to 3 years when you register for your son next year? better join and volunteer the clan's activities and try to clock at least 40 hours cos for this year registration for this coming june, i understand from a lot of the mummies i know in the clan, those applying for nan chiau are trying to clock closing to 40 hours and the numbers are quite huge.Hi all,

My fren whose son in one chinese enrichment in sengkang cc goes to NCPS with my child told me that one of her son's enrichment friend's mummy who has been with huay kuan for 3 years and never did any volunteer cos she thought that by being long members, she will automatically get the letter. In the end about 20 of them (from her son's enrichment) under huay kuan, all got the letter except for this mummy. She din expect that she wont get it and in the end with no letter, she has to go and apply for Anchorgreen primary. -
anyway i expect for Nan chiau competition will intensify either next year or the year after cos the anchorvale horizon will be ready by 2013 to 2014 and many parents will try for Nan chiau which is ,1km from anchorvale horizon. After 2014, the condominum near the MRT are up and the BTO flats are up opp the temple, the competition will be worse and i think phrase 2b will need balloting

Hi Larkspur,
Thank you so much for yr feedback. I'm wondering how do I go about doing volunteer work for SHHK? I have only joined them for more than a year. Is there still time to do volunteer work? So if I'm lucky enough to get the referral letter, do I still need to ballot? However, if I didn't manage to get one, that means I have to go for phase 2C right? Then if still can't get in under 2C, can I apply for anchor green under 2C? Anchor green is my 2nd option. Is the school good? I have heard lots of good reviews about it. Anyone here has any opinion about the school? -

You only can apply one school in one phase. So if u choose NCPS under P2C, u cant apply AGPS under P2C.Hi Larkspur,

If cant get into NCPS in P2C, then u got no more chance to get into AGPS under P2CS. -

So if I'm lucky enough to get the referral letter, do I still need to ballot?
Getting the letter only qualifies you to register in P2B. Whether you will need to go through balloting or not depends on demand vs supply. In the event that demand > supply, you may still need to go through balloting (because it depends on which distance category the balloting will be for).coolmum552:
Yes.However, if I didn't manage to get one, that means I have to go for phase 2C right?
coolmum552:
No. If your child applies with Nan Chiau in P2C and doesn't get in, you will only be able to register for your child in P2CS. You will only be able to register with schools that still have vacancies in this phase. Vacancies for most of the popular schools are filled in by P2C.Then if still can't get in under 2C, can I apply for anchor green under 2C?

Hi qms & mummy of 3,
Thank you for clearing my doubts. I’m starting to feel stressed out by all these already! Do u know how i can do volunteer work for SHHK? Hope its not too late…Btw, how do I check the distance between the nearby schools n my place? -
coolmum552:
hi, you can email to Sara at wangh@shhk.com.sg and in the email put your name and mobile number and state that you wan to be included in the volunteer lists. So once they need volunteer, they will mass mailed out to those in their volunteer list. Be sure to check your emails often cos volunteer in huay kuan very \"hot\". one tip though is that if you see an email from huay kuan informing new or big events or activities coming up, be sure to dilgently check emails cos for this kind of events they will need volunteer for sure.Hi Larkspur,

For Anchorgreen, try not go into phrase 2c supp cos the balloting is very bad unless like my girl's best fren, her mummy try for nan chiau at 2c , couldnt get, went to anchorgreen at 2c supp, still suay, then later go sengkang primary but her mummy smart enough to put her name in the waiting list and just before school start, she got a call from anchorgreen that someone pull out, so she is given the priority cos her flat just next to the school. Think can see the inside of the school from her bedroom. -

Btw, how do I check the distance between the nearby schools n my place?
To check the distance between the schools and your house, please refer to One Map:

Please use the School Query function. -
Hi all,
This is my very first time to post and I’d like to seek your valuable advice.
My son is entering Primary School in 2013. We have searched some schools and come out with the following schools as options.
1)\tPei Chun Primary – We can register under Phrase 2A as my husband is an old boy from the school. But, I feel that the travel distance is quite far as we are staying in River valley.
2)\t ACS Junior - we can register under Phrase 2B as we are a Methodist church member. However, we should be going for balloting or maybe we don’t even have a chance of balloting as we are staying more than 2Km from the school.
3)\tRiver Valley - we can register under Phrase 2C as we are staying within 1Km from the school. However, from the balloting histories of this school, they might be a balloting even within 1Km, if we are not lucky. (There was only one time balloting within 1km for the past 5 years).
Considering this situation, Pei Chun will be the safest /less stressful choice but would the Pei Chun be the really “best choice” apart from the distance??
Or, would it be worthy to try ACS Junior even though the chance is so slim?
Apart from ACS Junior and not considering distance, which school would be a better choice between Pei Chun and River Valley, in terms of academic, environments etc?
If you were at my situation, which school would you choose?
Any advice will be really appreciated.
Thanks
