John has 3 times as many stamps as Peter. When John loses 420 stamps and Peter loses 40 stamps, Peter has twice as many stamps as John. How many stamps does each of them have at first?

Hi

X --> 15 units
After X gives 1/3 to Y, X --> 10 units, Y ---> 10 units + 70

So, money each has :
X --> 15 units
Y --> 5 units + 70

If X gives 1/5 to Y,
X --> 12 units, Y --> 8 units + 70
8 units + 70 = 12 units + 10 --> 4 units = 60, 1 unit = 15

X --> 15 x $ 15 = $ 225
Y --> 5 x $ 15 + & 70 = $ 145

Sam : Andy --> 7 : 9 --> 35u : 45u (total 80u)
Ken : Sam + Andy --> 1 : 5 --> 16u : 80u

80u-16u = 64u --> $ 2560
1u --> $ 40

35u --> 35 x $40 = $ 1400

Sam's salary = $ 1400

Sam + Andy --> 7 + 9 = 16
Ken's salary : Sam + Andy --> 1: 5
So, need to make Sam + Andy a multiple of 5 and the lowest common multiple of 16 & 5 is 80 ie 16 x 5
