It's a report on depression being one of the causes of suicide in children and an example of a teenager becoming suicidal due to the loss of her parents' care. Her parents were too busy working that they left her with her granny and aunt which resulted in frequency quarrel between her aunt and her. She became sort of schizophrenia but fortunately a teacher noticed her odd behaviour and she managed to get treatment.
Suicide rate is low in Singapore but is no 2 killer after accident among the youth. A study from between 2003 and 2004 showed that among 2000 students from the 6 to 12 years old age group, 85 are suicidal with another 630 having suicide tendency. Experts believe that a person has a suicide tendency in the range of 3.5 to 11% and the highest possibility of committing suicide is among the youth and middle aged due to identity crisis cos of matters of the heart in the former and job security and broken marriage in the latter.
Self mutilation due to depression is a warning sign and there is an increase in the number of people seeking treatment which leads to a belief that the society has been covering up the problem of youth suicide.
Statistically, the year before there was 33 people seeking treatment and an increase to 40 last year, an overall 21% increase which may not be bad as early treatment may reduce the suicide rate.
To the youth, most of them commit suicide due to a temporary problem such as depression which is curable and they should be more optimistic in their outlook in life. There is a worry that due to the financial crisis, which may lead to more family facing problems, there will be an increase in suicide. A booklet will be published next month to educate the public on the signs in relation to depression and teen suicide so that there will be greater understanding and awareness of the problem especially among those who are working with children in the schools and clinics.

Hmm, seems like a lot of NTU students are a little suicidal, any of you have children there? I thought SMU is much more competitive, from what I know, NTU is slightly more relaxed.

My students told me there is a suicide club in NTU, I am not sure. Does anyone have a kid in NTU to confirm?

This example is too far from home. I read an article on a preschooler attempted suicide here, cannot remember the details because too shocked for words.

Even closer is someone I know at lower pri age but stressed by worries, so has constant suicide thoughts.

Honestly I am no longer surprised nor shocked now because it is a result of wrong focus in life.

My 7yo gets stressed very easily as I find him quite a perfectionist…
