I saw something in the TODAY paper today that I personally think has an effect on kids.


(As many of you know, I am very anti-media because of their bias towards bad news and hype. This is another one of those arguments).

WOW!!!! I'm so impressed! So these are the kind of subjects that kids, for one reason or another (be it press bias or teacher's instructions) - are most IMPORTANT!

Fear your world, kids! H1N1, oh the paranoia! Terrorists at every corner waiting to bomb your school! Earthquakes and typhoons! Nuclear missiles raining from heaven! Poverty and hunger and joblessness!

Why would young impressionable pampered children want to live in such a world anymore?

I even find it hard to believe that the tv trumps the internet, esp for young teenagers.

Coincidentally today, I spoke to a friend who mentioned to me about the Seng Kang’s student case. She also pointed out there are alot of children’s suicide cases not reported in the newspaper. I agreed because my husband’s ex colleague’s son jumped down from his home last year at age of 12. No report at all and all hush hush. There was no pre-sign at all and parents are quite easy going, hardly gave him stress. An above average boy in a neighbourhood school. He indulged in computer gaming, comics and story books like Mr Midnight and ghosts stuff. All was discovered later in his room was strange drawings of icons which may be related to cult following. Till now, parents could not draw a conclusion what make him take the no return route.


That’s a reminder for all parents to :

Do not focus only on children’s academic
Pay attention to their emotional well being
Know their interest and guide them (steer clear from improper influence esp from media - internet & TV)
Spend time with them (quality & quantity)
Set a ritual time with children to allow them to express their inner thoughts
Do not judge their’s opinion but have an open mind

Certain \"opinions\" have to be corrected, regardless of whether they can accept it at that time or not.

It's a report on depression being one of the causes of suicide in children and an example of a teenager becoming suicidal due to the loss of her parents' care. Her parents were too busy working that they left her with her granny and aunt which resulted in frequency quarrel between her aunt and her. She became sort of schizophrenia but fortunately a teacher noticed her odd behaviour and she managed to get treatment.
Suicide rate is low in Singapore but is no 2 killer after accident among the youth. A study from between 2003 and 2004 showed that among 2000 students from the 6 to 12 years old age group, 85 are suicidal with another 630 having suicide tendency. Experts believe that a person has a suicide tendency in the range of 3.5 to 11% and the highest possibility of committing suicide is among the youth and middle aged due to identity crisis cos of matters of the heart in the former and job security and broken marriage in the latter.
Self mutilation due to depression is a warning sign and there is an increase in the number of people seeking treatment which leads to a belief that the society has been covering up the problem of youth suicide.
Statistically, the year before there was 33 people seeking treatment and an increase to 40 last year, an overall 21% increase which may not be bad as early treatment may reduce the suicide rate.
To the youth, most of them commit suicide due to a temporary problem such as depression which is curable and they should be more optimistic in their outlook in life. There is a worry that due to the financial crisis, which may lead to more family facing problems, there will be an increase in suicide. A booklet will be published next month to educate the public on the signs in relation to depression and teen suicide so that there will be greater understanding and awareness of the problem especially among those who are working with children in the schools and clinics.
