RVHS:
Zhuge:
It seems that VJC can achieve a 50% rate of 3 or 4 H2 distinctions.

I'll like to encourage RV to progress towards this target in 2-3 years time. RV already has 43% in the first examination. It is not unthinkable to aim for this goal.

do you know RV percentage rate for 3 or 4 H2 distinctions?
it is not available on the school website

It is availiable in RVHS website now:
Highlights

- 3 students obtained 8 or more Distinctions

- 28 students obtained 7 or more Distinctions

- 90 students or 24% of the cohort obtained 6 or more Distinctions

- 27% of the cohort achieved at least 4 H2 Distinctions

- 44% of the cohort achieved at least 3 H2 Distinctions
thanks for the info..except for TJC...
Percentage of cohort which achieved at least 3 H2 Distinctions:
1. RI - 68%
2. HCI - more than 50%
3. VJC - 50%
4. NJC - 44%
5. RVHS - 44%
6. DHS - 40%
7. TJC - not available

Therefore, it is important to do well in HCL.

It improves the statistics for 6-8 distinctions.

Hi DaisyT,

Most students take 4H2, GP, HCL and project Work. That makes it possible to get a maximum of 7 distinctions. In order to get 8 distinctions, the student will need to do another H1 or H3 subject (usually, it is a H3 subject because it helps in scholarship application while another H1 isn't that useful at all). To get 9 distinctions, the student will need either 2 H3 or (1H3 and another H1,usually a third language) and this requires approval from MOE (to do 9 distinctions).

From my explanation above, you can see clearly that HCL, PW and GP are important for the statistics for 6-8 distinctions. There is no problem convincing students that their H2 subjects are important because it is obvious to them. However, for HCL, many RV students believe that it is unimportant and merely getting a pass or D7 is good enough. Refer to the article which I provide the link.

http://www.zaobao.com.sg/edu/pages5/edulive110116.shtml

This newspaper article dated 2011 January. It mentioned that the batch of sec4 which took their HCL in 2009 did badly. Number of distinctions was 4% below national average and the rate for C6 or better was 13% below national average.

You can easily calculate that this batch is the batch which just received their A level results on 2nd March 2012. My conclusion is that, if not for the disastrous HCL results which they took 2-3 years earlier, the percentage for 6 or above distinctions would have been much higher.

I understand that all subjects are important but it is obvious that RV students are good in their H2 subjects, PW and even GP but apparently quite a significant portion of RV students take HCL very lightly. It is high time to take it more seriously.

Thot since HCL in RV is also one of the promo criteria, as read fr this thread,
And RV standard for HCL is high, (go w/o saying) presumptuously the pupils do well.

After the new changes, HCL result is better. But this year, the result drop back again. You may have read earlier in this thread about some fuss that the P was asking some students to write appealing letter to stay on in Rv for failing their HCL.

Seriously, apart from learning HCL because it is your root, there are practicl reasons why the students should do well in it.

What's the test about and is it difficult? I'm wondering what is the purpose of taking the test? Is it just to gauge the standard of the student?
