Subject Combination in JC
-
Hi, I’m a JC 1 student posted to ACJC. My score is 9 minus 4 = 5.
Im currently thinking hard about my subject combination. I’m intending to take ELL(English Language and Linguistics), which is, by itself, offered as a H2 subject. Im a science stream student and wish to have the following combi:
H2 bio, chem, math and ELL.
I wish to take 4 H2s, but ACJC has a requirement of a student to attain 8 and below for L1R5 before he/she qualifies for 4 H2s.
I’m intending to appeal for 4H2s, but really unsure if its right for me. I understand the workload is much more than H1. But isit advisable to take 4H2s? My olevel results are:
Eng- A2
MT-A1
HMT-A1
Chem-A1
Bio-A2
Phy-A2
Comb Hum.-A2
Amath-A2
Emath-A1
Im thinking of another combi as well, if i cant get in ELL.
As follows:
H2 bio, chem, math, H1econs.
Would you able to compare and advise which combi is more suitable?
And would you please kindly clear this doubt of mine:
If a student takes 4 H2s, i understand that in uni score calculation, the worst h2 will be converted to a h1 subj. However, if all 4 H2s scored As, which is the worst H2? Are there things like high As or low As? This is really bugging me. -

I would advise u to take up 3H2 + 1H1 instead of 4H2. Hence, your combi should be biology, chem and maths at H2 and econs at H1. By jc cohort standard you are average and there's no point to take additional workload.
If you do well during your promos, you can always apply to take up a H3 module which ranks you comparatively with students offering 4H2. There are several stats boards which accept 10 aus for scholarship applications. For UAS, the unis compute your 3H2 + 1H1 + PW + GP total max 90 pts. For 4 H2 students, their weakest H2 is regarded as H1 whereas those top students that managed to score straights As for 4H2, their score shall be computed as 3H2 + 1H1. No difference. Can't diffferentiate btw a high A or a low A same as 0-levels.
I also notice that you scored very well for your HMT. If it is chinese, you may wish to substitute your H1 econs with H1 chinese studies. -
Hi thanks a lot for the reply! I would like to ask, could you tell me why i should go for H1 chinese studies? How does this subject help in university admission? Like what courses can i get into?

Hi, correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that uni admissions courses are mostly focused on your 3H2+1H1 or 4H2 grades, instead of your choice of subject. Perhaps the choice (relevance) of your subject to the course will determine your admission in borderline cases, but as far as I know the grades you get are much more impt a factor.
For me as a fellow student, my choice would depend on 1) how confident you are of doing well in the subject 2) interest in the subject 3) how relevant the subject is to your future uni course. These factors have different weightage for different people

I’m asking on behalf of a friend. What subject combination should one take in JC if one intends to go to Medicine or Law faculty? Or Engineering? Thanks.
-
For NUS medicine, one must take H2 chemistry
and H2 physics (P) or H2 biology (B). So the popular subject combination is usually BCME or PCME (M : Maths, E : Econs), although any contrasting subject can replace econs.
For NUS law, any subject combination will do because a good grade in GP and good A level results are most important.
For engineering, it depends on the type of engineering courses. Some require both H2 Chemistry and Physics. Others require either one. PCME (or any contrasting subject) should be a safe choice. -
Thanks MandyMummy. For Law, is there a preference of History over Geography or it really doesn’t matter?

Not that I know of. Most important are the good GP grade and near perfect University Admission Score. Also doing well in the interview is important. -
Thanks.
