Can Someone help me at this Maths Problem? Its driving me NUTS
Jim and Fred had a total of $40. Jim gave 3/7 of his money to Fred. Fred then gave 1/6 of the total amount of money he had to Jim. In the end, each of them had the same amount of money. How much money did each of them have at first?
(This is a P5 Question so plse reply in a P5 manner of understanding!) Bless you for helping me out...
you can work backwards ..
In the end,
Jim --> $ 20
Fred --> $20 --- this is after Fred gave 1/6 to Jim, so this amount is equal to 5/6 of Fred's money.
Before Fred gave 1/6 to Jim,
Fred --> $ 20 x 6 /5= $ 24
Jim --> $ 40-$ 24 = $16 -- this is equal to 4/7 of Jim's money at first
At first,
Jim --> $ 16 x 7/4 = $ 28
Fred --> $ 40 - $ 28 = $ 12

I do not have time to draw the model at the moment, I will try to put in words here..
in the end,
Jim --> $ 20
Fred --> $20 --- this is after Fred gave 1/6 to Jim, so this amount is equal to 5/6 of Fred's money
-- draw 5 blocks for Fred (since 5/6 left) and also 5 blocks for Jim since they have the same amount... ie end state :
Jim --> 5 blocks
Fred --> 5 blocks
from here, one can see that this is after Fred give 1/6 to Jim, so, 5 blocks represent 5/6 of Fred's money before the transfer, ie he transferred 1 block to Jim. So, draw the model before this transfer --> transfer 1 block back to Fred and you will have 6 blocks for Fred and 4 blocks for Jim .. so, before Fred give 1/6 to Jim
Jim --> 4 blocks
Fred --> 6 blocks
again, from this model, one can see that Jim had 4 blocks left after giving 3/7 to Fred ie the 4 blocks represent 4/7 of Jim which means that before the transfer, Jim had 7 blocks. Now, draw the final model which is the start state -->
transfer 3 blocks back to Jim and we have
Jim --> 7 blocks
Fred --> 3 blocks...
10 blocks --> $ 40
1 block --> $4
At first,
Jim --> $4 x 7 = $ 28
Fred --> $4 x 3 = $ 12

If john starts to run only when mary is 8m ahea 5 sec to catch up with her.
Form two eqn in x an y.
