I feel pace is not impt but consistency is. We do 1 chapter per week but read other books.

Mine took almost 2-3 months to complete book1.

Need the child to have to right mood to teach.
Sometimes he will reject it, saying that he doesn't want it .... 😞

Doesn't matter if the child took 2-3 months to complete 1 book. It will be disastrous if they don't want to continue.

Try to make the learning fun which is more important. For me, once i see my DS loves it......i will not stop. I just gently \"push on\". That is why it is important to go with the child's pace. Be flexible.

Feel very sad when he rejects it.
Then I think, i should not give up
If I don't teach, then nobody will.
It will be sad if kids of next generation speak only english.

Totally convinced that our kids should read more advanced Chinese classics. Not just learning Hanyu Ping Yin too, Chinese is about character recognition. Reading Chinese classics is definitely a great way to bring depth and interest for the language.

well, the book advises to go along the pace of the child. esp if they are young. I think laughingcat's son is extraordinary! not every child has that interest or aptitude at that age.

my daughter started around 3, and has learnt the first few lessons but I go at her pace, and once she loses interest, i stop. no need to force at this age. what's impt is not to kill the joy of learning mandarin. once it becomes a chore or something they resent, it'll all the more be an uphill task to get them to learn anything in this genre ever after!

So don't be anxious! not every thing is instant noodles. go slow and keep the interest alive. glad that right now my kid initiates learning mandarin words, asks how to say \"XX\" in mandarin, on her own initiative chooses ipad mandarin apps to play, and brings mandarin books to me to read. that's good enough for me.

I will also speak/discuss/explain to him in Chinese when he is watching his favourite English cartoon. From there he learn the chinese equivalent of the english word. Sometimes, he will response back in chinese. I will also print out the chinese nursery rhymes lyrics, put some nice cartoon picture, then we sing together. His pronunciation is a bit off but at least he does not rejects it. Teaching using the card method is a bit dry, have to try other ways and means. Using the card, then ask him to match or look for the same word in the chinese lyrics.
Consistency to make a point to teach everyday is important but it is not easy to get a good response from him.
I also try to link the words from book1 into meanful sentences so that he will relate better.
