        Fluffy:
        Hi,

I have been away for past weeks and :imsorry: for not thanking all of fellow parents out there earlier who have been so supportive and understanding. Really appreciate your kind words. :thankyou: You have given me strength to continue to believe in my son and guide him, ensuring he will one day be able to survive on his own independently.

So far, I am very happy with RI's education program (although a little stressful at times which is OK). I have seen him mature a little since he started Sec 1 this year. His involvement in sport as a CCA has been instrumental in helping him to be a more resilent child. At times he lamented that the trainings were so tough but never once he wanted to quit. He will be going overseas for trainings and competition during this holiday. The overseas program seems rigorous and a few students back out but I am so happy that he perseveres.

My son unlike some students does not have many opportunities to participate in workshops or represent the school in various competitions or events in RI. He is neither in leadership position or has the abilties to excel in additional CCA. He is just an average kid who can only focus on 1 CCA and have to work hard to acheive mediocre result. BUT I believe he will pick up valuable LIFE SKILLS in RI.

TO THE PARENTS WHO BELIEVE IN YOUR CHILD AND ACCEPT WHO HE IS, I APPLAUD YOU! :salute:
        Hi Fluffy,

I read with interest about your son’s experience in RI. Firstly, getting into Sports CCA at RI is already a great achievement and if I not wrong it should be the most popular CCA and one needs to be very talented in sports to even stand a chance of being selected; what more about representing RI trainings and competitions overseas. It is good to hear that possesses all the good characteristics of a sportsman such as resilience, perseverance and never give up attitude.

These are some of the characteristics required for him to succeed in studies and life. He is still in Sec 1 and it may take some time to get adjusted to the new environment. Don’t worry about being an average student in RI as he had already crossed the most difficult hurdle of getting there in the first place. Just try to get him to keep up with the daily work and spent more effort on projects and PTs as good grades in these will help to pull his overall GPA up.

There is no need to focus on more than 1 CCA as it may be too time consuming and just focus on what he is good at. There should be sufficient leadership positions for most kids in areas of their interest and since he is excelling in his sports CCA, getting a leadership in this field will be advantageous to him.

Your encouragement and support will surely spur him to greater heights.

Hi all. I am new here. I have read through this entire thread and realised that it is only on RI(sec), but my daughter is currently in sec 3 and is aiming for RI(JC). I would like her to try for DSA next year but after checking the RI website, apparently applicants have to have a special talent in a sport/performing art. My daughter is very good at international chess and has won national competitions and has also participated in international ones. However, although RI(JC) has international chess as a CCA, it is not classified under sports but is a special interest CCA instead. But like sports, her training is very rigorous and competitive. Sadly, does it mean that she cannot apply to RI?

My daughter also wants to join the Humanities Prog(GP LIT HIST ECONS MATH) regardless of which JC she goes to, but her first choice JC is certainly Raffles. I’m worried about her chances of getting into HP if she does get into RI. I know that in RI(sec) and RGS there are people who in the RA for literature and history. I believe that she will be at a disadvantage compared to them. Do any of you know students in RI JC Humanities Prog who weren’t previously from the Raffles sec schs?

Would like to know more about choosing a CCA in RI. What are the CCAs, schedules etc. Thank you.

Please go to RI website. They are all listed in there.

Read thru the web, to join MEP is not easy, need to go for a test, and only 5 were selected last year.

Hi, can any parent confirm if schedule below for athletics means the child stays back a total of 9 hours just for this cca? or is it like either dates? once a week?

                    Practice Schedule (from website)
                    Day Start End
                    Monday, RI(JC) Stadium 3.30pm 6.30pm
                    Wednesday, RI(JC) Stadium 3.30pm 6.30pm
                    Friday, RI(JC) Stadium 3.30pm 6.30pm

                    What about for Maths club?
                    Practice Schedule
                    Day Start End
                    Friday 1.30 pm 3 pm
                    Friday 3 pm 4.30 pm

Do most parents join the RPA?

It is very common a child has to stay back for the CCA he joins 3 times a week in most of the schools.

If you wish to join RI, be prepared to spend a lot of time in your CCA(s). Most students have more than 1 CCA, on top of their 3rd Lang & the various Electives.

All sports CCAs requires students to stay back at least 3 times a week with one of the sessions on a Saturday for some.

Uniform Group CCAs have training twice a week with extra activities (camps & etc) now and then. The training sessions almost always last longer than the time indicated on the website.

Merit CCAs are usually on Fridays. Some Merit CCAs require a lot more time commitment.

I am aware of students having 4 CCAs, including a sports CCA! Some of these guys are also in the RA and continue to win prizes in competitions. It's amazing how they manage their time. My son has 2 CCAs, and I'm already making a lot of noise regarding the disproportionate amount of time he has spent on his CCAs.

RPA membership is optional. At $60 for 6 years, it is very reasonable. However, the only time you'll see RPA member in 'full force' is during the year 1 subject briefing by the school teachers, arranged by RPA and for members only!
