All About Parent Volunteers (PV)

Hello Chief,
Many thanks for the advises and elaboration. Now I have a much in depth on how the system is like. Starting to feel the stress!!!
I have seen called up the school in Pasir Ris, they have asked me to write a CV on the contributing factors which I can made to the school. I was flabbergasted! Can I ask how should I begin the CV? Are there any sample which u can advise me? Din know that applying a PV is so much similar as job hunting. -
Hihi,
Just notice that my post was reply by 2 diff ppl. Anyway a BIG THANKS to TJkok and Lilfeets for the response and advises!

Dear rainn_77
No worries, I have benefitted a lot from this forum, and we are all here to help one another. I'm also learning myself cos' I have a DD going to P1 in 2014 as well
As to PV being like job hunting, it's not exactly uncommon, for myself, on top of filling up an application form, I had to draft a proposal on what areas I can contribute to the school. I still got rejected by the school anyway  , but thank goodness I was accepted as a PV by another school . Like Lilfeets had mentioned, it'll be good to send in your application to the various schools you are considering, so as to be able top give yourself more options for PV.
One of the factors you may like to consider is the balloting history of the schools as well. Some schools require balloting at Phase 2B already, so if you are not within the 1km range, chances are, even if you clock in more than the stipulated number of PV hours (do note for some schools, it's more than 40 hours), it's not a 100% guarantee you will get into the school. But from the looks of this year's registration, the 4 schools that you have shortlisted are not over-subscribed at Phase 2B, so if you are able to secure PV for either of the 4 schools, and clock the hours required, your chances should be quite safe. -
Hi there,
Regarding PV, it is possible the sch rejected our application for PV? -

Yes,Hi there,
Regarding PV, it is possible the sch rejected our application for PV?
the sch may reject your application for PV if it has reach its quota / if the services that you list down are not required by the sch / if you stay beyond certain distance from the sch(usually by past yr phase 2 ballot results)...there may be some other reasons also which we may not know...
the 3 reasons above are the most common ones from what i gather in this forum... HTHs -

Well, to be honest, the school is not obliged to give us a reason why our PV is rejected, but it's usually due to either of the reasons mentioned by weyw in the earlier post. Thanks for your reply.

I had the experience of being rejected as a PV as well, but looking at it from a more positive aspect, at least being rejected by the school at application point would beat the following scenarios, which I think it's harder to swallow later on:
1) School accepts everyone as PVs, but unable to find the appropriate activities required for everyone to clock the stipulated hours, thus resulting in some being unable to fulfill the criteria in Phase 2B.
2) School accepts everyone as PVs, and realise the number of PVs outweighs the number of vacancies available, and thus the PVs will have to go through balloting or even face being cut-off (not given a chance to ballot at all) based on distance at Phase 2B.
That being said, have you thought of considering other schools you could offer your services as a PV so as to secure your chances at Phase 2B? Or have a back-up school in mind at Phase 2C? -

Thanks for the valuable feedback.
First of all, I am a new citizen, I am unsure on how does the Singapore Primary enrollment process like. My husband former primary school is no longer exist and my family members have advised my parents in law and my husband that the best Primary school in my area would be Pasir Ris primary school, so I was so disappointed when I got to know my application for PV has been rejected without a reason. In fact, my house was more the 2km from the school that I wish to surrender my PV svc.
I think I have to plan on alternative schools now. -

For more information on P1 registration, a good guide to start with will be the MOE website itself http://www.moe.gov.sg/education/admissions/primary-one-registration/ . The information should not differ very much unless there are changes to policies and guidelines from MOE.Hi tjkok,
:thankyou:

KSP forum has a very good FAQ thread on P1 registration (http://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=3311)too . You can refer to some of the links posted in the thread, as well as the Q&As raised for your reference. -

By the way, don't despair over the choice of schools. I do not know where you reside exactly, but I believe you should have at least 1-2 schools that fall within the 1km if not the 1-2km mark from your residence. The school that your child gets into may not be your number 1 choice, but it doesn't mean your child will be shortchanged as I believe each school has its strength, be it in terms of CCA, academic or other areas.
