haha true true... but i think cos JC level..they need to get into local university...so the few thousands spent on tuition is worth it... (from a parent's point of view) !

Sometimes need to look at the students' profile as well. Some students are already doing relatively well, in a good JC and motivated. Of course it is easy to help them achieve distinctions.

$100/hr is really steep for primary standard and only one subject! It's important to take note of what the tutor can offer instead of just looking at market rate though. Some tutors are passive, and they only go through assessments with the child. Sit there the whole there and invigilate the child. But some tutors are really passionate, and take the initiative to come up with their own curriculums, buy school textbooks and such to understand what the schools are teaching. These are the tutors who deserve to command more.

Agree. It is not just the qualifications that count. It is the quality of the tuition time that is important as well. Each lesson must be geared towards meeting the needs of each individual child. There may not be many distinctions to boast about, but that the child has truly learned.

Agreed. I like the truly passionate tutors 😃

180 per hour is RIDICULOUS! i used to pay about 35 per hour for lower sec tuition!

My friend is paying $70/hr. She says that the tutor is a JC teacher. Is this the standard rate?

$70/hr belongs to the higher end, but most of the NIE trained teachers are of that rate, i believe. some will be willing to go down as low as $50/hr.

well some, with alot of experiences & track record will charge about $40/hr (P2).

My daughter's Math tutor charges $35/hr for primary 6 last year. She usually charges $40/hr for lower sec but this year she didn't increase the price for me 🙂 Probably next year I will have to start paying $40/hr.

I know it might sound like ranting but somehow tutors can be severely underpaid as well. I have been tutoring this particular family for almost 3 years yet there is no pay increment at all.(part of the fact is I did not bring it up so family also act as if nothing happened)

I am a qualified trained teacher and only paid $30 an hour for 2 of their kids at once which i think can be considered on the low end of the deal.

Well, then it's your responsibility to bring up the issue to the family. Who will automatically ask u if u want to increase your tuition fees?

Precisely but I guess being nice to this family in the end paid off. Unbelievably, my finance ended up being the parents' long distance niece LOL.
