In that vein, then we might as well call for DSA to be scrapped for athletes, musicians, etc. Also 'unfair' advantage for them right?
I think what the MP Mr Hri Kumar Nair and most parents are calling for DSA for GEP students to be scrap as it is seen as an advantage to skip PSLE which is a major educational stress point. Just like IP program should also be scrapped as O level is skipped.
This is an interesting phenomenon. I observe, so far, no calls to scrap DSA through other domains. No one quibbles about their 'rights'. Only geppers are targeted... hmmm. Intellectual prowess (for want of a better description) vs other talents... and schools should only welcome talents other than geppers with open arms? Otherwise they are deemed as discriminating against mainstreamers. :yikes: And that will be unacceptable! Cos, you know, they are the majority... -
Melodies:
Melodies. Scoring well in psle has nothing to do being 'gifted', which is actually a misnomer. Arggghhhh they really should rename the programme!clay569:
That's why they got into GEP in the first place...
See that is the problem! When I asked why many geppers can't score well though some did very well! The geppers' mom will jump n say the geppers r not prepared for scoring psle!! R u saying they r not truly gifted? -

Perhaps out of 569 GEP, the most 10% to 20% make it to the top among the top. Wasting tax payers' money, grooming them and yet only few can make it.
GEP's aim is NOT to ace PSLE.
We also have the Sports School, you know. Yet we don't even do that well in most regional sporting events in the relevant age groups. So, should we shut the school down? -

My kid did the psle too and it is not true that there are Olympiad maths questions. The last question which is usually the most difficult question ( I could be wrong) is on area.
Really ah..die..I never expose those Olympiad Maths to my kids and neither does the school. I trust the schools to teach whatever needed to score in exam incl PSLE. If that is the case, does that mean I shd start researching on such courses?
Please do not scare yourself or your child. I am a strong advocate that if a child is not strong in Maths, please do not \"torture\" them with Olym Maths questions. Let them learn at their own pace. -
Learning Lab charges $1000 per subject per mth and they only accept students who come in the first 10% in their sch exams. my colleague’s son was rejected as he was not from his school’s top class.

Yes agree that DSA for sports or music domain should be scrapped. Perhaps that is why SYF which had been used a factor of consideration for DSA has no grading now just a participation cert. Students spend a lot of precious time practicing for SYF but not all get DSA. Sports DSA may be asked to remain but being able to be on par with the rest of the cohort is important. Not sure if an IP school for example wants to retain a sports DSA student that does consistently very badly academically and may not make the grade for the IP affliated JC.
In that vein, then we might as well call for DSA to be scrapped for athletes, musicians, etc. Also 'unfair' advantage for them right?sinoboy:

But GEP kids are definitely academically stronger and unlikely to foul up their A levels. So top schools choop them early through DSA. Perhaps school ranking and principal/teachers measure of performance depends on A level results. But now all schools are good schools so ranking and less motivation for the schools to take GEP students via DSA. In a way, the importance for GEP DSA is lesser now?
But best solution is still scrap GEP, DSA and IP program and look into overage students taking PSLE together with our 12 year old locals.

The top kids in my DD’s school (scoring 262 to 27plus) did not attend TLL nor other expensive centres. I know them. I personally know two who attends TLL and their scores are below this range.
So please don’t think u have to spend a lot to get high scores. -
Connecting the dots:
My DS scored 4A's & 236
