All About Measuring Home-School Distance

Not sure if anyone here has the answer to this.


Was discussing school distance with a colleague who’s registering her child in 2011. The school that she’s targetting is due to move to a temporary site for 2 years while the current location is being "upgraded" to accomodate single session in line with MOE’s requirement.

In the two years that the schools is at the temporary location, is the home-school distance from the school site, or the temporary site?

Checked on MOE website doesn’t yield any good indication which way. TIA!

The answer to your question can actually be found in the http://www.moe.gov.sg/education/admissions/primary-one-registration/faqs/#proximity section of the MOE website, Question 24. In short, you should use the address of the permanent location.

Statutory Declaration

My child is being looked after by the grandparent or parent’s sibling, can we make use of their address for the purpose of registration?

Statutory declarations are required where parents may enroll their child in a school within 2 kilometres from the place of residence of either of the child’s grandparent or parent’s sibling. The eligibility criteria (s) are as follows:.

Both parents are working full-time at the time the statutory declaration was made; and

The child is under the full time care of a grandparent or a sibling of either of the child’s parents; and

The child’s grandparent or parent’s sibling is not employed.

How do I go about making the Statutory Declaration?

For the purpose of registration, both the child’s grandparent or parent’s sibling and one of the child’s parents are required to make a statutory declaration at the MOE Customer Service Centre. The statutory declaration can be made from 8 am to 4 pm, Mondays to Fridays and from 8 am to 12 noon on Saturdays, from Tuesday, 7 July 2009 to Friday, 14 August 2009.

Other than the stipulated duration, can I come to the Ministry to make the Statutory Declaration earlier?

No. The Statutory Declaration can only be made during the stipulated times at the Ministry.

What is the balloting priority for children using statutory declaration for the purpose of registration?

If statutory declaration is used, children who are registered using either of the grandparent or parent’s sibling address and residing within 1 km or between 1 km and 2 km of the school of choice are balloted together with other children residing between 1 km and 2 km.

Hi, I have a silly question :oops:

I heard someone say that to qualify for the 1 or 2 km distance near sch, you must move into that area 2 years BEFORE you register your child. Means if I register my child in 2012 I must move in by 2010.
Is it true??
What i read from MOE website is only that if you buying new development, you must move in within 2 yrs of the child entering school - means by P2.

Can anyone clarify for me my confusion?

This is new to me. As far as I know, they only look at the address on nric; or for uncompleted properties, the sales & purchase agreement.

Don’t think that’s true, MOE not so free as to compute the length of stay.

I think its true, within 2 years must move in. MOE may check and if found false, will remove the child from the school.

MOE not so free to check … they do not have the resources to do so anyway. But if there is complaint from other parents, they will check & take action.
