For the parents who asked about Performances that you can bring your child for. You can also consider performances at the Esplanade Concourse or Library (have to check their websites for updates). These areas are more casual.


One coming up is a Performance by Chamber Groups from Music Students from 4 MEP schools. During the March Holidays, Conductor Darrell Ang worked with MEP students from ACSI, TJC, DHS, and NJC in public masterclasses at the esplanade library

After receiving Coaching from the \"Master\", theses Student Ensembles will be Performing 'live' on 6 April 2013 at the Esplanade Library's Open Stage.

Date: 6 April 2013
Time: 5-6pm
Venue: Library @ Esplanade


The timing is quite child-friendly. The place can be considered quite casual. You could even sit at the cafe next to the Open Stage and watch while having your coffee or dessert or early dinner.

Is it true that Yamaha Music School is quite expensive? Considering they have their own music school holidays and on some months, I will only have 3 music lessons with them.

I don't think they are expensive if you compare with the market price,


but you also need to take into account the teacher's quality and way of teaching, see if it is worth the value

Currently my dd is attending the Yamaha music course (the Junior course), but I’m quite busy and can not attend the class with her. Therefore I intend to looking for a music tutor at home. But I dunt know which one is better, group class or one by one? Any mommies had an experience pls share with me and can suggest some good music teacher? Thanks in adance.

Musical language is the key - to think of what forms the melody (triads, scales), how do the notes move (ascending, descending, steps, skips), on top of that rhythmic patterns.


You can train by getting your DD to hum along to classical tunes heard on the radio/CD. Sooner or later you will realise the tunes tend to move in a certain way and hence notes can be more or less be anticipated (in aural the tunes given are such and not some obscure abstract melody).

In higher grades remembering melodies get tougher not so much because of the length but because there are two/three lines going on at the same time and the student has to pick out one single line from these.

I sent my son to Yamaha when he was 5 but stopped after level 2 cos I had no time to practise with him so he couldn’t play the pieces and was quite discouraged.

then I started him with one-to-one piano lessons about a year later and this is what I realised:

in group lessons, teacher tends to neglect technics like how you position your fingers as long as you can play the pieces. For one-one-one, the teacher can point out exactly what’s wrong n can focus on areas the student is weak in, e.g. rhythm, etc.

if your girl is ready for one-to-one lessons and you can afford, why not?

having said that, i once asked my music teacher friend who strongly recommanded yamaha. as a child, she went thru’ yamaha and private piano lessons at the same time. she told me that yamaha trains hearing which i agree. I think it’s not easy to find a teacher who can train aura skills.

Are there any schools or teachers who teaches only the aural component in preparation for ABRSM practical exams? Would be keen to explore that if it is available. Would be good if the lessons also teaches the correct way to sing.

I thought NAFA has dedicated aural class ?

Focus is on theory… anyway, doesn’t hurt to do more.
