• RE: Math Arena - Discussion

bumbee:
Hello! I am Mdm C.Tan and I would like to share my experience with you readers about Math Arena, at Tampines and how my search eventually took me there.

For the most part of both my sons’ academic journey, I teach them. It has proved to be an enriching as well as a fulfilling experience but at times trying, especially 2011, as my elder boy sat for the PSLE and my younger, enters Primary 3.
I am a stay home mum and after fifteen years at work, I decided to put my career on the backburner despite enjoying what I did simply because I saw motherhood as my first priority and I have no regrets doing so. As my two boys grew, I learnt that no two children are academically the same and coaching them would take on different strokes!
My search for Math coaching for my elder son, only began in late P4 as I saw a trend towards Heuristic Math questions set from the school that he attends. Although he was strong in the subject, I felt moving forward, I needed to support and nurture him further in his love for math and to equip him with the mathematical skills needed to answer the myriad of questions as he progressed towards PSLE. Oh, what a journey that has been in my search for the \"right\" tuition centre or the \"right\" home tutor! I found myself frustrated because most do not deliver results. There was a lack of emphasis on mathematical concepts and \"know-how\" despite advertising their unique brand of methodology. To add on to that, a lack of \"heartware\". On home tutors we engaged - That, is an entire story altogether!
We chanced upon Math Arena quite by \"accident\" during one of our online searches. At that point in time, from the many math practice papers the school was gearing the students towards, I realised that the tuition my son was getting was not sufficiently meeting the mark as there were still misinterpretations of questions and misconceptions. When we came to, he had only five months left to PSLE! We knew that fundamentally our son was more than able to pass the paper but we needed to \"up\" his tutoring.
My encounter with Persis at the centre was warm and heartening. I addressed my concerns to her and without hesitation, she took my boy on and through the weeks, concepts were emphasized, re-emphasized, simplified, expanded upon and shown how it is all encompassing and integral in working towards achieving accurate answers. His confidence soared and by the time PSLE came, he was ready to \"conquer\"! I also like the time taken by Persis to explain to me what she had covered during the lessons and what I needed to have my son work on at home. She would then revisit those concepts with him in the following lesson to see that he has understood. Persis was both nurturing and patient and she showed that it mattered that my son excelled. He misses attending lessons there now that the PSLE is over!
Besides Persis, my son was also tutored briefly by Damian Lee and he found his teaching interesting and concepts clearly understood.
To those who are wondering still wondering, I hope my email has squashed your queries. May your search come to an end to what took an eternity for me, many moons ago!
So good to see many positive feedback on this center. Bought my boy to check out the center last weekend and he is looking forward to having lesson there. Since my boy is under 9, I've also booked for the Modular Diagnostic Paper (MDP) and hope he can start his learning at Math Arena soon(in Jan 2012).

Thanks to all who had provided invaluable feedback. 😄

Glad my input helps. To add on, if you look at existing math syllabus questions, there are at times a few challenging questions thrown into an exam paper which appear to be the formats of olympiad math. So I do feel that such training does help to a certain extent.

However, guess we also have to note that we should not expect these enrichment centres to do wonders alone ( and this applies to any sort of classes, not just pertaining to Math Arena). The child himself or herself must have the motivation to learn and we as parents should also follow-up closely with the centre and the child to track the progress.

Happy exploring.. Maybe I would \"see\" you there! 😉 My DS would be there to stay 😉
My DS is only P2 and so far had not encountered really challenging questions in his math paper yet. Guess it may be useful for PSLE math as I've noticed there are always this one or two difficult questions. Hope this investment will come it handy in dealing with this.

I had more or less decided to let him go for it(with or without hubby's funding, of course now I will ask him to pay too..hahaa 😂 ). Hope to see you around and learn from you and your DS.

:thankyou: leeven. Your feedback is what I am looking for, very helpful. My purpose of considering Math Arena is the same as yours for yr DS. I guess I will just try Math Arena next year.

May I know which trainer your DS trained under in Math Arena? You can pm me if it is not so convenient to reveal here.

Thank you.

PM you the names of the 2 teachers who currently teach him. Another teacher(not sure of the name) who came to teach for special round NMOS. Not to worry all teachers are equally good and experienced . 😄

You can talk to the center incharge Ms. Percis (hope I spell the name correctly , :xedfingers: ) . She is more helpful and she is herself good teacher too

Received and replied your PM. Thanks. Will drop by the centre soon(after DS final year exam).

Hi all, I would not be able to give comments of the other math olympiad training centres in Singapore as I did not make any comparison. My DS is currently in P3. I selected Math Arena 2 years ago primarily based on Math Hub's track records of medalists and its locality. And to tell you the truth, I am glad I made the right choice as my DS is able to develop his potential there. I was looking for a place that offers non-routine programme and a foundation for math olympiad competition. I got what I am looking for, or rather, more that what I was prepared for 😉

Joining the centre is indeed a turnaround as I was clueless 2 years ago what I should do with my DS who had a hungry passion for math. I wasn't looking for syllabus math. Due to the manager's and the trainers' sharp observation and dedication, they helped my child to achieve quantum leap in his progress. I give thumbs-up to their programme and trainers' dedication.

Environment? It is very homely and my DS enjoys going there early everytime before his class. The trainers are approachable and are within easy access. We could easily get instant feedback from them after every lesson if we wish to. They would attend to our queries promptly. My DS tells me often that Math Arena is his second home!

My DS often looks forward to the weekends not because it's weekend, rather it is because of his Math Arena class, haha.
KingRascal, appreciate your timely review/feedback. 😉 I can use this to request for funding from my CFO(a.k.a. Hubby) for this math course. Been trying real hard to come out with some good reason since this is not a typical math academic class(which can directly translate to better grade). I hope my DS will like it as much too.
Thank you.
Hi

Appreciate very much if anyone could share with me their itinararies or interesting places which we should cover on our trip to Taiwan this November (2A + 1 8YO).

It is going to be a 12 days trip. We r planning to just book a 2-3 nights accomodation in Taipei for the 1st few days and check out the hotels/ minsu when we r there. Is that advisable? Btw, any recommendation of minsu at Hua-lien?

Thanks in advance.

Lene

I am also going to Taiwan this Nov and had planned this 9D/8N itinerary mainly for my kids(4 & 8yrs). I am planning the route in this manner to minimize travel time since TaoYuan is nearer to TaiChung and going back from TaiChung is easy. I will be taking High Speed Train mainly to move between major cities. You can add another day in Hua Lien to visit Farglory Ocean Park and one day in TaiChung or 清境農場及青青草園 and one more day in Taipei to cover JiuFen/KeeLung/YehLiu which I intentionally left out since we had been there before.

Dinner @士林夜市
Day 6 : TAIPEI - KAOSHIUNG(高雄)

豬肉紙 etc.

Hi Alphonsous,

I am also planning a day tour from taichung with similar places mentioned by you - but I stay the night at SunMoon Lake minsu instead. May I know how much the tour/cabbie charge you for your Day 8 tour/ for how many persons?

which hotel are you staying in Taichung? I am also considering staying in taichung instead of SML because tot can go Fengjia night market.

did you have to pay a deposit to your tour/cabbie guide for the day tour?
For Day 8, I had not booked any cabbie yet, still looking around for one.
My group will be 4A + 2C, so most likely I'll need a 7-seater cab which is more expensive, guess will be at least NT3500 - 4200. I heard there are plenty of cabs around HSR and it will be very easy to find one for a day trip to SML and Puli.

I've booked 2 quad rooms at this hostel in Taichung as I want to stay near to Fengjia market. You can find the booking infor and reviews at this link.
http://www.agoda.com/asia/taiwan/taichung/tomato_rooms_hostel/reviews.html.

The HuaLien driver I've booked for a one-day trip does not require me to pay any deposit.

• Math Arena - Discussion

I am thinking of sending my boy to Math Arena for their P3 MOT lesson next Jan and can’t seem to find more information regarding this centre.

Would appreciate any parents with kid there to provide some feedback on their programmes/trainer/centre…etc.

My main purpose is to stretch my boy who is good with his math and wondering which other math centres(Sakamoto…etc?) I should consider. I stay in Tampines.

TIA.
