A dated MP's parliamentary reply to a later start for schools.

      http://www.moe.gov.sg/media/parliamentary-replies/2010/05/later-start-time-for-single-se.php

There's more flexibility for a later start when the school goes into single session. Currently, some primary schools with single session implemented have rescheduled their starting time to 8am. Ultimate decision lies with the school committee. My daughter will be in PM session for the next two years but hoping things will improve in time. For me it's about having a more godly hour to start the the schoolday as enjoyed by pupils from international schools. An invaluable time for families.

The scheduled renovations to the Hillcrest campus is also a great opportunity to redesign the premises to ease traffic flow. An important factor considering the higher volume of pupils in single session.

    • RE: How to teach children to handle bullies

I am a believer that we should teach our kids how to hold their own from a young age. I always tell my daughters that they are born bold to manage the numerous challenges in life. Bullies only have power over them if they allow them. If you parents intervene directly, the bullies and peers will lose respect for your children.

For my girls, I teach them to avoid/resolve conflict whenever possible, retort with wit and retaliate with physical manoeuvres which do not harm the other. E.g. staying away from the bullies, not showing any fear when encountered, standing up to them with comebacks if confronted and neutralizing physical attacks by deflection or jamming.

It’s a great opportunity for them to develop EQ and character in the face of adversity. My P1 daughter was emotionally-bullied by P2 girls while on the school bus for the last 3 weeks. It ranged from unfairly claiming her seat, constantly mocking her name and deceiving her into moving a seat back on the pretext of sitting together. It was a baptism of fire but she bravely stood up to the bullies. Not only did she make them looked like lousy bullies, she gained newfound respect among her peers and of herself. Well, I couldn’t be any prouder for her.

Let's put your persuasive letter writing skills for the better of our children.

We have only ourselves to blame if we don't do something to break this messy cycle.

I'll be addressing a formal letter of requests to the P tomorrow. Hope more will add voice to the cause too.

      ooioo:
Hi MummyStay, there is really alot can be done, but b cos no one is looking at it, now it is a big whole mess every morning!

If the toilet have only one loo, how long the queue will be? But if you increase to 10 loos, the queue will be cut by 10 folds.

it is so easy to give all school bus priority, that the bus can just drive right to the school, if you have the proper system in place.

But now i see every single car wants to drop their children off at the same place, so the queue is so long.

There are 3 schools but yet if you ask who is incharge of the combine traffic mess, you cannot find any body to be in charge, thus nothing is done.

Schools are seperate into primary, secondary and jcs, so all 3 schools talk to diff boss and under diff mgmt, but one MOE, but no one wants to be in-charge or be busy body, why do so much work but get same pay right 😉

I believe one of the main reasons for designated school buses is to control the traffic volume. However its is creating a monopoly which compromises our children’s welfare. Understand bus operators target to reach school earlier to make room for unforseen delays so that all pupils will not be late. If we can’t come up with solutions, let’s push for solutions.

There could be a few ways which we could improve the situation:

      1) Lobby with the Ps and MPs for a 8:30am start when RGPS goes into single session. I see no concerns about coinciding with morning peak traffic. One good reason is this timing will not compete with other schools’ regular earlier start. It’s nonsensical that the welfare of our children should revolve around the livelihood of the bus operators. There must be an alternative around it.
      2) Network with other parents who are using the same bus in your neighbourhood. Arrange for a private minibus/carpool if its allowed under school regulations.

It takes a concerted effort to make things happen. Suggest writing in as it seems to warrant more attention to issues in Singapore. Maybe use some of the pointers brought up here. Only when enough calls for change is felt, will they then reconsider the status quo.
