• RE: The Alternative Story (TAS) - Discussion

      hi BeThankful,

My DCs have never gone for TLL English but I had gleaned precious little from asking others. TLL English is extremely engaging and they cover current affairs so kids are very well prepared for GP (as I know it), but they don't drill on basics. TAS drills on the basics - grammar, vocab, etc. That's my understanding of the main difference.

It all boils down to the child and what you think/they think they need. All the best!

      Hi N.Lo & hquek,
Sorry for the late reply. Yes, agree that I like TLL's coverage on current affairs. I have spoken to DD1's teacher and will continue for another term before I decide. Meanwhile, she's concurrently trying out at another centre. Honestly, I'm also little hesitant switching to a new centre at P5; she's doing fine at TLL but just find the class a tag too slow.

      Regards.

Has any parent switched their child from TLL to TAS at P3-P6 level? Can you share the feedback from your child wrt the differences in the 2 centres?

Are you thinking of switching? I think the best is to go for trial and see which fits better because what may fit one child may not fit another.

My children are at TAS for English and TLL for Science haha, so it is not apple to apple comparison

      Thanks N.Lo,
I brought DD2 for trial & she enjoyed the lesson. However, DD1 looked thru the material & prefers something more challenging.

      Hihi,

Anyone with children at TLL upper primary Science? Can share experience? Can also pm me if not convenient to discuss here. Thanks! šŸ™‚
My DD1 has been with TLL since P3, she's P5 this year. I'd say she has benefited tremendously from the program, has been scoring consistently above 90 marks for her exams. She's lucky to hv a good & experienced teacher. Unfortunately the teacher didnt follow up to P5 this year cos she's taking students from anther cluster of schools.

I signed up my DD2 RELUCTANTLY for P3 Science this year cos are all new teachers with TLL. I'm still contemplating whether to switch her to the tutor at Holland (travelling time from my house is much further)

      Hi parents,

The Science teacher at Holland V is actually at Pandan Valley.
The Learning Boutique @ Pandan Valley if I didnt remember wrongly. Julia replied me but I had signed my DD (P3 then) up at Learning Lab by then.

    • RE: All About Choosing Piano Schools And Teachers

Hi, I hv zero music background myself. Am looking for a piano teacher for my 9yo DD. Been recommended 2 teachers (both more than 15years teaching experience) and they quoted me S$80/lesson for 45mins for coming to my place in Bt Timah. Does it make sense to pay this fee for beginner level?
anyone who has gotten the contact of the science tutor in Holland from Julia earlier on - can you please share it with me please? Kindly PM me. Thanks.

Noticed that many has seek this Holland tutor, can anyone kindly share any feedback? Expensive? 1-1 or class tutoring?

Please PM me the contact # as well. Thanks!

So sorry, fellow parents, for not responding promptly! My DS is now in Sec 2 and I seldom check in this forum nowadays. I happened to log in today and have just replied to your PMs.

My husband and I credit our DS's PSLE results to this amazing tutor at Holland. (Sorry, I don't want to post her contact details in a public forum, as I have not asked for her permission.)

My DS was very fortunate to be under her tutelage since P5. My DS's P4 form teacher recommended to us when his results dipped in P5 SA1. He was not coping well with the transition from P4 to P5 then. He told us that the tutor and her team are experienced MOE teachers who are also PSLE markers for many years, they have written very good materials and are excellent at explaining the concepts. Besides, this particular lady tutor is very good at motivating and inspiring students. Everything he told us about her has turned out to be true. She has taught my son very well. He looked forward to his weekly lessons, and even initiated to join her English classes. What I also appreciate is the meticulous marking for compositions and Science open-ended questions. All the worksheets are neatly and carefully marked with feedback/ encouragement on the worksheets. It is very hard to find qualified teachers who not only teach well but have a heart for our children. This road to searching for the right tutor for my DS has been fraught with some very bad experiences with irresponsible/dishonest tutors. I've also paid for expensive tuition from a 'branded' tuition centre only to find out that the class tutor is a fresh graduate. Hope this helps! Julia
