• RE: Q&A - PSLE Math

Concept:
fullhope:

Hi morning , can anyone help with the following question. Thank you in advance. DS ans is 21cm but answer is 17.5cm :?

The ans is the folllowing:
From 1999-2000->50-35=15
From 2000-2001->70-50=20
From 2001-2002->95-70=25
From 2002-2003->130-95=35
From 2003-2004->140-130=10
15+20+25+35+10=105
Average->105/6=17.5

So I think that the division process is in reference with the graph(6years)

If there r only five periods of growth, it has to be divided by five. For eg, a baby born on 1st Jan 2000 weighing 3kg and reached 23 kg on 1st Jan 2004 on his 4th birthday. Do you divide 20kg by 5 or 4 years to find the average growth per year? Obviously by 4.

In the figure below, ABCD is a rectangle, AD = 10 cm and CD = 20 cm. The area of CDE is 40 cm2. Find the total shaded area of the figure.
http://www.positivelyquit.org/images/temp/NHSA22.jpg\">

Hi pensiveow

The area of CDE (40 sq cm) is common to both triangles.

Area of 1 triangle ------ ½*20*10 ------ 100 sq cm

Area of 1 shaded part ------ 100 – 40 ------ 60 sq cm

Total shaded area of figure ------ 2*60 ------ 120 sq cm

Best wishes

Thanks Tianzhu
Question is flawed. E is actually at the mid point of AD, thus the area of triangle CDE should be 50 , not 40sqcm.

atutor2001 and MathIzzzFun,

Thank you for pointing out that the question is different and the current question is out of P6 syllabus.
I saw this question a few months back. The answer given by a school teacher was such that the unshaded area when compared to the shaded area of the quadrant is something like 1/4 of it.
Firstly, I don't think that teacher's method to the question is correct n when drawn to scale definitely doesn't look like 1/4 of it. I think it is not possible to work out the answer to the question

Can anyone help me with the following question?

Q1) 3/5 of Bette's money is $324 more than 3/4 of Tina's money.
Bette has twice as much as Tina.
a) How much does Tina have?
b) How much does Bette have?

Thanks in advance.
For this kind of question, I like to use simultaneous equations because you just need to draw the model according to the logical understanding of the facts. This is useful especially for those who are good in interpreting the facts into models.

2.Jim bought some chocolates and gave half of them to ken.ken bought some sweets and gave half of them to Jim.Jim ate 12 sweets and ken ate 18 chocolates.after that the Number of sweets and chocolates Jim had were in the ratio 1:7 and the number of sweets and chocolates ken had were in the ratio. 1:4

How many sweets did ken buy?

I have here another method to solve this same question recorded in YouTube. It takes only 7 minutes and I trust your child will be able to follow and understand the simplified problem-solving method.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzPT1iIzaJk (PSLE Ratio Question)
It is great that you have another method to solve certain questions. I have come across different students who have varying abilities to understand Maths. From my experience, majority are more able to understand using model method because they can see concepts better with pictorial images in front of them.
Usually only those with higher flair for Maths are able to understand and independently execute your concept to reason out the steps.
Thanks.

This is another method of solving this problem sum. Hope it is explained clearly to you. God bless.

Kindly help me with this question

1) Gerald had 60 sweets more than Herlina. After eating half of what they had, the ratio of the number of Gerald's sweets to the number of Herlina's sweets became 3:2.
a) How many sweets did Gerald eat?
b) Gerald gave Herlina some sweets and the ratio became 8:7. How many sweets did Gerald give Herlina?

Thank you
Sorry, I cannot draw the model here.
Make Gerald 2 units plus 60 n Herlina just 2 units in ur model.
Since both ate half their sweets, so remove 1 unit n 30 sweets from Gerald n 1 unit from Herlina. Therefore Gerald now had 1 unit plus 30 sweets while Herlina had 1 unit left.
Now their ratio had become 3:2. Therefore Herlina's 1 unit is equal to 2 parts. Gerald's 1 unit plus 30 is equal to 2 parts plus another 1 part which is 30 sweets. Therefore every part is equal to 30 sweets.
The rest you can work on it, I sure.

• RE: Childcare Anchor Operators

Every year in January we take in K2 students in our student care centre from all types of childcare /kindergarten centres. Just wish to say that private ones produce students who r better prepared for primary one. Why? I thought because private ones charge higher fee, so got better quality teachers. From what I read here, doesn’t seem to be the reason. Hmm…

• RE: Do you cane your daughters when they misbehave?

Allow me to share my two cents worth. In our student care centre, the parents wonder why their kids behave so much better than at home. One main reason is : the kids know the rules n if they break the rules, they will be punished accordingly. They may use all the tears but they know they will still have to face the punishment. Eventually, the kid knows that good behavior is the best way to a pleasant life in the centre.

At home, it really depends on the will n resolve of the parents to deal with their kids. Which methods we use as parents is fine as long as the kid is deprived of certain privileges when certain rules or bad behaviors r committed. Can be caning, kneelings, ban from certain privileges
What r the ‘no no’ are physical abusive ( caning is only acceptable on the buttock so that it will not shame the kids in public), shaming the kids in front of others, hurling destructive words at the kids like ‘I don’t love u’, ‘U r so useless compare to so n so’, etc.
Bottom line is : Be firm in carrying out discipline but never stop loving ur kids.
