If it is one’s own call to want to be the champion; why the need for external perks, recognition and honour to motivate?
Why expect to be recognized and honour when it is one’s call and desire to perfrom?
There is prize and recognition for top scorers. It comes in subsidized fees etc etc. It gives your choices to do 3rd language. Education gives you choices, is this not what education is all about? IT gives you access to better schools etc… are these reasons not good enough to encourage and motivate you to do well? ALso, there is leadership roles only available for those in top 10%. There is enough recognition and perks to motivate and individual to do well.
If one is rich is SOUL, he/she does not need honour and recognition from the public.

RE: MOE to stop publishing names of top students?
MOE is still celebrating and encouraging academic excellence; it is done more subtly thru scholarship and other grants and maybe through the school’s own prize giving. I know ACS does have ceremony to honour their top scorer.
Just that the recognition does not come publicly.
PSLE score does not even need to be included in your resume, no?
If A level is cert is required for resume and yet the A level top scorer is not publicised; So why the need to honour PSLE top scorer ?
As such, in my opinion; there is not so much of a difference whether or not PSLE top scorer is publicised.
Technical excellence is not the determining paths our child will take as many do not end up pursuing a career related to their field of study. How many bankers are business grads? How many chemistry graduates actually went on to become a chemist?
Many at the top management may not excel academically when young. They are only those with average grades. If so, why the need to glorify the top scorer?
Even if you want to compete for your country be it academic or sports; it is because of your passion not because you expect to be recognized and honour.
If one is humble and rich in soul, one does not need recognition and honour and your country to rejoice and celebrate your achievements,
just like you do charity out of your own goodwill; you do not need the recognition. -
RE: MOE to stop publishing names of top students?
I am only referring to one of the post that the top scorer deserve to be recognized and honour for their hardwork.
One strive towards academic excellence for one’s own goal and purpose, no?
To be a doctor or lawyer to help people, to be a teacher to make a difference to someone’s life. How does honouring these top scorer help to emphaisze and meet the social objectives?
Why the need for recognition and honour for academic excellence? Am sure many past high PSLE achiever’s objective to do well to meet their own goals and purpose and did not expect to be honoured?
With recognition and honouring the top student; many will become the product of the society like what Dr Richard Teo said in his eulogy. I am positive that his parents did not make him what he is but savouring in recognition delivering what society deem succeesful helps to make him temporarily forget humanity.
Academic prowess is nothing to be ashamed of but academic prowess is nothing to be proud of too. At the end of the chess game, be it the King, Queen, Knight or Pawn; it goes into the same box. -
RE: MOE to stop publishing names of top students?
Do our children strive to do well just to be the top and be honoured?
What is the purpose of education? What about other character values?
I have seen top students in my DD’s school who does not allow the weaker students to join their group. Top student who does not want to share their secret to success for fear that someone will overtake them.
As it is for all leadership position in school; academic takes precedence over character. To these junior top scorer, academic is the ultimate power to success and they think they are a motch on top of others just because they do well academically. I cannot imagine their arrogance in the event they are being honoured as a top scorer.
Why should we held a young child in such high honour based on one’s academic excellence? Education is more than academic excellence.
PSLE is only part of the game and not the end of the race. Who would remember the face of the top scorer in time to come? As such, if there is no value add why have it in the 1st place?
Should we not honour and celeberate humanity, compassion, kindness, humility etc ?
I believe each school will still announce their top score and students and the top students still get honoured in school and through various MOE scholarship and grants. There is still recognition and honour and encouragement comes in a different form. -
RE: Raffles Girls' Primary
Hi Angie,
P1 and P2 does not have remedial class at all.
The various learning support starts 1 hour b4 school hours. -
RE: Principal of top school under investigation for hiring prost
Also, 4 hours 4 customer; you need someone to drive you around…
you think you can consecutively do for 4 hours…
As early a P2, the few top students selected to go to some leadership programme.
the school think as if the other students do not know. Some students felt so discouraging at P2. How to have self worth. The system started identifying at 8 yers old.
At Sec2 they streamed you based solely on grades regardless of your interest.
School got to meet KPI so cannot afford to take chance. -
RE: Principal of top school under investigation for hiring prost
Maybe she is controlled. She may want to backed out but the pimp did not allow via threat on circulating nude photos etc… she must have been lost at 1st but subsequently has no way of backing out. The pimp would not let her out too since she can help him make so much money.
The education system is to be blamed too. It is too elitist and it shamed the students who does not do well. The schools also grouped the good ones together instead of mixing them together to ensure cohesion. Our education is like the vice trade. Once you are down and out; it takes a huge effort to climb up. p3, streamed, p6 streamed, Sec2 streamed etc. At the tender age of 9 and 12, if you do badly you are a dead meat. You are tested beyond and when you fail you are no good. If you do not have a "rich" parent or "educated + connected" parent; there is no way out. At 14, the system decides whether you are science or art students based solely on grades regardless of your interest. A lot of our girls will be like this girl has very low self worth and many hungry wolves like this pimp will readily take advantage of that. -
RE: S'poreans to get priority for P1 places during balloting
Yes, my daughter chinese tutor also mentioned that the way the china school teach maths is more interesting and holistic than ours.
If you look at their school chinese textbook; it is so interesting.
They read poems and from there learn new words and phrases.
It is a far cry from our school’s chinese textbook.
