    • RE: IP, IB vs A Levels

      lee_yl\" post_id=\"2082665\" time=\"1663490766\" user_id=\"17023:

Extreme can go anywhere. But what if the kid is only an average A-level or IB student?

An average student in say, Eunoia or VJC probably won’t score AAAA. But an equally average student in SJI could score 40 points or better (since 85.5% of SJI scored at least 40pts). He would be eligible to apply to Oxford or Cambridge.

On the other hand, the same “average” kid in EJC has a median A-level result (possibly, AABB without H3), won’t be eligible for both Oxford and Cambridge. His entry application will just go straight to the dustbin!
Oxbridge (or any top US uni) is never just about grades, usually selection tests and interviews play an important role. I don’t think eligibility or conditional offer is a hard rule too. I quote a few personal cases that I know for Cambridge:
      a) IB conditional offer was 41, student achieved 40, he was accepted
      b) interestingly, NUS high students have no fixed gradation CAP requirement, or subject CAP requirement. I know of 3 students, same yr, who got conditional offer of graduation CAP 4.0 (over 90% of students could achieve this), 4.2 and 4.7 respectively. Note that students would need to submit their cumulative CAP during application, so Cambridge would already knew what these individual students are capable of achieving.

If we just talk about grades alone, I would think NUS High and IB students have an easier time compared to A levels … but of course, offer and admission is never just about grades!

Never seen this page before! Well, I stand corrected. Maybe it's new-ish? Because really, my daughter didn't have H3 as part of her conditional offer, and as far as she knows, her friends didn't either.
I saw the Cambridge conditional offer letter of my friend’s son, for this year. It was H2 AAA with H3 merit, or H2 AAAA. Course is Comp Sci.

justbehappy, do we need to pay for the telemedicine?

Feel ok and free then reply ok..no urgency..
Hi MrsKiasu, thanks for your tip on cleaning aircon, but we hardly use aircon at home, mainly use wall fans and ceiling fan to have better circulation of air. For PCR at clinic, we collected paracetamol, throat and running nose medicine and paid a subsidized rate of $10 (think govt subsidized all who do PCR). Besides receiving instructional SMSes from MOH for PCR positive and for close contact, we did not contact MOH at all and they did not call any of us too. We received a letter of isolation order and an oximeter at our doorstep. There is no telemedicine.

Good news is, our smell appears to have come back a little (after 1-2 weeks into our infection/loss of smell), today we can get a faint smell of coffee and soap fragrance, hurray 🙂

Thank you Sun_2010, ChiefKiasu, MrsKiasu, Esteema for your comforting words, really appreciated them!

MrsKiasu, not so cham, I cook at home everyday. Haha now don’t need to put much sauce as can’t taste anyway so food is healthier. If run out of food can easily call delivery or order grocery. It’s great it is so convenient in Singapore! Looking at the bright side, perhaps we do not need booster for many months to come?

Oh, hope you and your hubby have fully recovered from the more serious symptoms.

Pardon me for asking , if you dont mind sharing the below , want to get a picture, even though each body is different.
How long from start of symptoms till you recovered? And the severe symptoms, how long did they last?
Hope the feeling of fatigue, aches is all gone fully.
Was it home recovery or in any of the facilities?

I know of 4 in my friend circle ( in US/India) who still have extreme fatigue/joint/pain/ headaches/brain fog after covid ( all got late last year, early this year - pre vaccination) . They cant even get back to 80% normal routine. The ones who got later post vaccination are assymptomatic/very mild sore throat/cough ( tested as close contact was positive) . Imho, vaccination is helping the severity of Covid19
I took Moderna, my husband took Pfizer. My symptoms are milder than his, his earlier symptoms included high fever 38.x and bad sore throat such that he said even swallowing air was painful. My fever was 37.x and sore throat was mild too. Our fever, sore throat, fatigue, body aches are more or less gone after 1+ weeks. My concern is actually our loss of smell and affected taste buds, which we do not know when they will return, or will they ever return :((

We are both on home recovery programme.

      ...
You can be having high fever, no voice, rashes, whole body ache, no smell, no taste, etc. you will still fall under mild symptoms.

      Ack?! :yikes: :scared:

Now I'm scared. Looks like I've got to learn to live in a world without smell or taste...

May I ask how how long it lasts in your case?

We are only 1-2 weeks into our infection, so far they have not returned. I googled, it appears that abt 40% of the infected people have lost their smell, some of them still have not recovered their senses after a year, a proportion has a warped sense of odour such that normal delightful smell becomes unpleasant odour.
      https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-021-00055-6

These are not “mild” COVID symptoms, as what MOH, their experts and our media want us to believe! And how about long COVID, which we still do not know?

      Be safe.

I think we are also protecting ourselves. It is not true that we only get mild flu like symptoms. There is loss of smell/taste (which we do not know it will take how long to recover) and we do not know if we will suffer from long COVID. We should not undermine the effects of COVID.

This is the message all have been getting - 98.6% has mild or no symptoms.

https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/health/the-good-and-the-bad-in-spores-fight-against-covid-19-ong-ye-kung[/quote]Yeah. I quoted from the article,
      “
      2. More patients with mild or no symptoms
There is now a higher percentage of infected individuals with no symptoms or mild symptoms, said Mr Ong.
About 98 per cent of infected individuals used to have mild or no symptoms. But in the last 28 days, this has increased to 98.6 per cent.
The remaining 1.1 per cent of cases need oxygen supplementation, 0.1 per cent require time in the intensive care unit, and 0.2 per cent have died.”

In his definition, “Mild or no symptoms” means
no need oxygen supplementation, not in ICU, not dead

You can be having high fever, no voice, rashes, whole body ache, no smell, no taste, etc. you will still fall under mild symptoms.
