Hi fellow parents,
I wanted to highlight a “silent killer” in the new SEAB 2026 English Syllabus (Subject Code 0001) that many of us might be missing.
We know the paper weighting has dropped from 55 to 50 marks , but the real danger isn’t the lost 5 marks—it’s the “Tone Trap” in Situational Writing.
Under the new 14-mark format, students can get all 6 content points correct but still score an AL 4 equivalent. Why? Because if they use the wrong Purpose, Audience, or Context (PAC)—like writing “Hi Mr. Tan” instead of “Dear Mr. Tan”—they get heavily penalized for Tone.
I’ve put together a short audio guide that breaks down exactly how to spot this “Tone Trap” and the new “Inference” requirement. It’s a quick listen for the commute:

For those who want to test their child’s actual essay:
I have also built an AI tool that acts as a strict “Senior HOD” to mark essays based on this new 2026 rubric. It checks for the “Inference Point” and Tone issues automatically.
