    • RE: Travel: Japan - General

During our last trip to Japan in Dec last year, we frequented a McDonald’s near our hotel. The main dining area was non-smoking. There was a separate area for smokers. The problem you may face is when dining in small eating outlets. We did that one evening and was seated next to a table with 2 smokers. Other than that, I do not recall any other incidents where we were seated next to smokers.

      Original Title: Hokkaido in Dec

Will be having our holidays in Hokkaido this dec and still very unprepared for it. Understand temp will be 2deg to minus.

Any tips from those who had been to Hokkaido during winter? How much winter wear to bring? What are the 'must bring' clothings?

      HELP!!

The right footwear during winter is important. We got timberland for us and our girl from imm outlet. It was 50% off so quite affordable. It is definitely worth investing in proper footwear to enjoy the trip. During the trip, we could see a lot of ppl losing balance and even falling and felt lucky to be able to walk properly without stress on snow covered streets.

Agree. Footwear is very important. Suggest that ladies wear sports shoes or those from Timberland as suggested above. Avoid wearing their normal footwear to Hokkaido. Another suggestion is to wear jeans, yes your blue jeans not normal pants for both guys and ladies. Bring some t-shirts to wear under your shirt or blouse. And a pullover or sweater over the shirt or blouse. Also a good jacket like those from Timberland or North Face. Those usual sports jackets are inadequate. Yes it can be really cold when the wind is blowing.

I saw all those china made bread makers in qoo10 costing under $100. Are these safe to use?

My friend used that and say good.. But I was thinking cos if faulty, who to look for?

KW 250 selling less than $200 I thought I saw

I think after sales service is important. Have been using the Redman breadmaker but after a while, the baking tin needs to be replaced as it leaks. Contacted Phoon Huat (where I bought the Redman BM) but the company says that it has stopped supplying the baking tin. Hence be careful and make sure that there is a reliable company which you can depend on for after sales service before you buy the BM.

    • RE: USA local tours

Similar to you, taking DD for holiday after psle. Free & easy. Dates probably few days after yours. Am renting a car from lax going Anaheim and LV. Hope to finalise soon.

Have done this before, no need GPS. By the way you use google maps. Just load the maps on wifi before leaving or at hotel.

      Thanks, GiftedGem,

You are right. The amount is not significant compared to the savings of flying by CX vs SIA.

    • RE: USA local tours

      Hi GiftedGem

I saw your post earlier in Jun 14 which I quote: "For this US trip, I booked thru Expedia last weekend. The price is around $1500 per pax with CX."

On another thread, I saw this as quoted: "I recently paid for airtickets bought in expedia.com.SG - the amount quoted to me was SGD. When the bill came, I was surprised to see that a different amount was charged on my credit card. " However this last quote was for a thread in 2013.

I assume that by you should have received your credit card bill for the expedia booking of the CX flight.

My question is whether the amount billed was as you stated or there was a surcharge as experienced by someone in the other thread which I quoted.

I am thinking of a similar trip to LA in Oct and hence will appreciate any feedback on expedia.

    • RE: Advise / recommend : Ceiling leak water - likely from Toilet

There are many causes eg leaking running pipes, leaking waste pipes or waterproofing proble or even leaks from your neighbour upstairs. You may want to identify the particular cause as the cost of repairs for each cause varies considerably. Firstly if you have more than one bathroom, you may want to turn off the main tap (usually on the ceiling) and not use the bathroom for a few days.

If there is no change to the leak, it could be upstairs or water coming from elsewhere not that bathroom. If the leak stops, then the probable cause is that bathroom. Then what you have to do is turn the tap back on but not use the toilet for a few days. If the leak reappears then the probable cause is a leak in the running pipes. A plumber can reroute the pipes at a not too expensive price. If the leak stops, it could then either be the waterproofing in the toilet or waste pipe leak. Check with downstairs the time it leaks. If continuous, may not be waste pipe since the water flows down the waste pipe only when you shower or use the sink. If it leaks only during use, it probably is the waste pipe. Cost of repairing leaks in the waste pipe is not too pricey.

Finally if the leak is continuous, it could be the waterproofing. This is the most costly to repair. Suggest you consult a few plumbers to assess the cause. Get more than one opinion. Listen to how the plumber assesses the situation vis a vis what I wrote above.

Most important don’t rush to renovate the toilet without confirming the cause.

    • RE: Travel: Australia - Gold Coast

Victoria Square Apartment is in a good location with supermart, nightmarket, beach and food outlets nearby.

should rent a car otherwise when you add up cost of transport to and from airport and visiting places, there are not much savings if any at all coupled with the inconvenience.

    • RE: Australia in December

Went to Goldcoast in Nov some years ago. I think going to Australia in Nov is ideal as it is not yet summer hence not as hot. In the day, its like Singapore when its not so hot except that it is mostly not humid. Hence very comfortable going about places like Movie World and other theme parks.

Hows weather in Nov? Thinking of going there during yr end holiday

We went to Gold Coast in Nov some years ago. Its just before summer ie the equivalent of going to Britain or USA in May. Weatherwise its very nice. In the day the temperature may be 27C or 28C but its not humid on most days. Hence its very nice going to the theme parks. At night its cool, perhaps it drops to 23C or 24C or so. No need to switch on aircon. Quite dry too. No rain during the week we were there.
