Thanks @mommyng and @swc

How to do well for history and geo? Any tutor for geo and history to recommend ? Is it true that nygh papers are much tougher than other schools ?

My daughter sec1 this year and she can’t gasp the concepts .. worries me as I don’t even know how to teach and just know that there is a msg computation 😰

For hist, there wasn’t any written test done in school at all. For geo, there was only one written test on term 3 which constitutes 20%. 60% of hist and geo is on the project (group and individual) done in September. Is she didn’t do well for these 2 subjects, maybe you can check is it the group or individual work section which pulled her grades down. For these 2 subjects, hardly any notes at all. When they were preparing for the term 2 geography test on transportation, I bought a guide from popular but not much use too. Also worried if they will have problem when doing actual written test and exam in school next year.

Hi, I’m a sec 2 (s3 next year) just lurking around for fun. For History, I would say the main thing in secondary 2 is to just grasp the answering technique well. There will be a few types of question asked (eg. purpose, utility, comparison) that your daughter will learn both in secondary 1 and 2. With practice, by the end of the year (History EOY) there shouldn’t be a large problem. There is also the 12m essay but that one is not tremendously hard to write, just know the rough format and the rest is just putting the relevant historical examples in.

For Geography, next year will be about Physical Geography (i.e deforestation, climate, etc.) It is more content-heavy and info-based in Sec 2 because there will be more written tests. Taking notes in class helps a lot and I also annotate the slides on ipad what the teacher says. The textbook for Sec 2 will come in very handy for WAs and assessments. In EOY, it may seem daunting (it was for most of us) to complete so many questions and one 8m essay, but with a good grasp of the topics taught and with a bit of practice (e.g how is relief rain formed, causes of deforestation, adaptations of mangroves) one should be able to do well.

Overall, don’t be afraid to ask your daughter’s Geography & History teachers for consultations when she is unclear about concepts/answering techniques. Especially before EOYs where consultations come in handy, as the teachers may not mark past year papers in class but your daughter CAN ask the teachers for separate consultation session during lunch/recess/after school and they can sit down with her for 15 minutes-or-so and mark her paper and give comments on how to improve for the actual EOY. Wishing your daughter good luck for next year!
May I know for year 1 students, is it advisable to keep their P6 Maths & Science worksheets and notes from enrichment centre ? I am thinking whether to keep them or dispose them after PSLE exams. Any advice ?

Hi! I’m a S2 student and I would say that based on my experience last year, usually Secondary 1 students wouldn’t really need their P6 Math and Science worksheets, as the content taught is quite different (i.e. no modelling, new topics that are totally different being taught).

      Hope that helps!

      Thanks, RedString !
You’re welcome 😂
