      Firsly, I think do you have a issue with deciding who is the 100%? That is usually on eof the common problem.Maybe you can send me ur solution then I can help u diagnose why u arrive at $740


      Secondly, remember that Ratio, percentage and fraction can be used to solve a problem sum despite the question being a % question.

      Solution (Ratio method) which is what I would usually use for this type of questions.

      6 : 5
      x 2 x 2
      J : A
      100 : 80
      5 : 4
      x 3 x 3

      15 : 12 : 10

      37 units --> 2220
      1 unit --> 2220 รท 37

      Just practise n practise. I used to do my ten years series like 3 times before any major exams.


      Even now , if u look at children who score well, they practise many problem sums until they are able to know what method to use for diff types of question.

      Some r able to visualize the model in their mind they do not need to draw them at all.

      Interesting thing is many children spend so much time drawing model as their teacher require them to look like a piece of art work, using ruler and all.

      Just make sure the model is big enough to fit in information and for resizing, should not take more than a minute.

      I agree with spunky's suggestions. Patience and doing our best to get improvement in his results to boost interest and confidence seems the only solution. Shower praise no matter how little the improvement may be (but not advisable to entice with material incentives).

      Tutor will not have the time needed to make such kids remember. Only parents can. So parents need to follow up on what has been thought by the teachers/tutors.

      There is also this funny thing, I called \"enlightenment\", which Chinese called \"kai qiao\" whereby the kid suddenly can understand all the concepts and most importantly can also remember them. Some kids found enlightenment pretty late - there is kid I know who \"see light\" in math only after SA1 in P6 - very worrisome for the parents. After that he was even aiming for A* after doing very well in Prelim.

      Just to share my experience.

      I am the one who started the thread. But I'd like to say that I have learnt to be content and happy with just one child. I have learnt to count my blessings instead of comparing with others how come some can have 3 or 4 kids and God has only given me one. In fact, now that my dd is in P2, I have come to thank God that I have only one. Its really no joke to have to jaga the child all the time. So much homework, CCA's, tuition etc etc. I used to feel terribly inferior about just having one child but God has been kind and blessed me with peace to realise that he knows best for me.

      Thing is sometimes, it helps to just give the child the same set of problem sum again. Let him/ her learn the skill of solving a certain type of problem.


      Get the child to explain it to you again each time. After a few times with a similar problem, the child will actually improve. Do try it,

      I used to do that when I was given the weakest lot of pupils. They always end up doing well by PSLE.

      Sometimes new problem compounded with weak English means the child is handling 2 weakness at the same time.

      Doing the same questions a few times and explaining to u lets the child at least master the Maths skills required, without the English problem.

      When the child improves and gets more confident with repeated success , then you give your child another set of problem sums with different skill requirement.

      The remaining 50% are either just plain lazy or poor in English. Kids in the lazy group would not be bothered to think when the problem gets too complex and just simply give up. The English Problem group doesn't even understand the question. Teaching in steps cannot help the lazy group to overcome the need to think or the English Problem group to understand the language used when many problem steps are combined into 1 complex question.

      I did think of taking my son out of one class. Need to check with him seriously what his teacher is doing for Chinese. Need more time to revise Comprehension OE with him. Maybe English as well. Just wondering what are the teachers doing with students during supp lessons.

What I told u abt what teachers do are v real. There are very dedicated ones (god bless them) but few r left as most r too involved w sch projects they r expected to do. then u decide what actions to take.

      Teachers r human they get tired too so teaching is affected, but ranking system has made teachin only a small part of performance ranking in sch.

      no marks should be deducted unless the question specifies that answer must be in the simplest form.

      However, as a good habit, teach the child to reduce at all times especially simple fractions like 4/8

      If she can without any stress, then fine, go ahead and pile it on her.

      Many teachers and parents make the same mistake: The more the merrier as every other parent is doing it.

      But if u plan properly, a few goes a long long way. Resist the temptation to buy so many assessment books.

      Solution:

      Use some of the papers in place of assessment books.

      Best part is u save money buying assessment books, questions are set by teachers for the top school exam papers and thirdly, u do not waste paper ๐Ÿ˜„
