allcc6:Based on my DD's experience, 3rd Lang is held at Newton MOE LC (except for German which is at Bishan). Malay is done in-house. Lessons were on either Mon or Wed. Generally, no clash with CCA, unless special/adhoc programmes. When that happens, students can arrange for make up lessons. NYGH provides one way transport from school to Language Centres (for a small fee, I think, $50 for a year?).For students who take up the MOE 3rd language, do they attend lessons in NYGH or externally?
Will the 3rd language clash with sch cca?

DadOfGirl:
Thanks, pirated, Jennifer and DadOfGirl for sharing ELL combinations. Good to know from DadOfGirl that ELL can be combined with Lit. DD was worried that she will have to do History (KI, Lit, Econs and History) if her JC doesn't allow ELL with Lit combination.TREX8:
Anyone with DC doing ELL? Can share what are the subject combination?
My DD taking 3H2 , ELL, Lit, MAths & Econs H1. Taking A level Now

Hi jtoh, DD is trying out for Humanities Programme at JC. She is rather certain about KI and Literature. But she was recently told that students on HP are not allowed to take ELL (reason being too much focus on English Language and Literature). If not allowed to take ELL, her choice of remaining H2 subject is limited - after eliminating those that she does not qualify and those that she is certain she does not want to do like H2 Math and Chinese-based courses (CLL, Translation). So thought of posting to this forum and explore whether is there such a restriction in other JCs.
She's planning to do the Humanities Programme?TREX8:
Hi, my DD is exploring doing this combination at A levels. Any comments?
H2: Literature, English Language and Linguistics (ELL), Econs and KI
H1: Math, PW, MT
Thanks!
My take on KI - The students taking KI would have gone through a selection process and would be the better students. That plus the small number taking the subject means you would be graded against other very strong students. If KI is graded on a curve, as are other A level subjects, this might affect the chances of getting an A. I could be wrong on it being graded on a curve.
Secondly, KI is not recognized by some overseas universities. As an H2 subject, it means the kid is effectively down to 3 H2 subjects during overseas uni applications. Something to bear in mind if you are considering studying overseas.
Thanks for the additional information on KI and overseas universities admission. That is a minor consideration as we are most likely looking at local universities. -

RE: Nanyang Girls' High School [*IP]
DD stays back three/four times a week, and she has been making do with $20/week allowance since Sec 1, and usually have some money left by end of week.
This $20 does not include payment for class funds, and other adhoc collection of money. She will tell me when she needs to pay for such items and I will pass the money to her.BP2013:
Mmmm... looks like $4~$5 seems to be the appropriate number.
But of course this is considering both recess and lunch allowance. -
Which device/tablet to get?
I am thinking of getting a tablet for myself to replace my laptop. Wonder if anyone can give some advice?
I would like a device that
- allows me to create, edit MS Word/Excel documents
- allows me to save files to thumb drive
- allows surfing of internet with minimal scrolling (10" screen? I have a spare 3G simcard)
- quick start (like smart phone)
So far I have tried the new IPAD and I like it for the large screen display and quick start. However, it is a closed system and I could not edit my documents and transferring of data is a chore (I have a habit of backing up using thumbdrive)
Others that I am thinking of is Samsung Galaxy Tab 10" or Windows Based Tablet like Nokia Lumia.
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. -
RE: Nanyang Girls' High School [*IP]
Can call up the bookshop and ask whether can get books earlier. From what I remembered it was rather organised getting the textbooks and uniform on the day itself.
Layla:
Thanks so much!
Didn't know this page was available.
For Sec 1 next year, can we go earlier to buy the books at NYGH or they will not entertain us? Worried about the crowd on 20/12.
I know we can get the text at Popular but still need stuff from school bookshop. -
