      Sun_2010:

What can be definitely said is t score of 50 for a subject indicates the child got the average raw marks .

That's what I thought. So if MT CL A*/A is 84%, it must mean that an A in MT CL can still get below average, ie. <50 for the T-score?

But I thought some of the complaint is that MT CL drags down by too much the T-score of a child who is not good in MT CL? Does this mean 'not good' in MT CL actually means 'really horrible' in MT CL? Then again, can't be the case if 3A* 1C (CL) can still get 258, right?

So does MT CL affect the T-score too much or does it affect it too little? I am getting conflicting signals here. :?

If you get B for Chinese, it's very sad you belong to bottom 19% for this subject. If you get B for other subjects, you still could be better than average. If you get A for Chinese, it's difficult to say how much impact on your final T-score. Let us assume top 20% is A* for all the subjects. then A for Chinese is in the range of 21% to 81%, A for other subjects is in the range of 21% to 43%. Your T-score is finally depends on the percentile. This is the bottom line!

Sorry, I mean the raw scores. Both languages are 200 each, Math and Science is 100. Total 600. Why?
is that why there're parents who attributed the success of that top scorer (280-er) to his supposedly easier MT. ๐Ÿ˜“

Such speculation and dissection of t score is really meaningless.

The t score is used for only one purpose - ranking of performance from #1 to #42,500th for the purpose of picking a sec school

The aberration of the t score may or may not result in not getting into oneโ€™s Dream school but as long as consistent performance is achieved by the child, it will show up in O and A level results. After sec one, no one cares whatโ€™s your t score. It is largely forgotten by almost everyone.

              But pirate has me worried.

If 84% of the cohort go A and above , it means the average raw marks for CL is above 75 - may be in 80s . So a 65 raw marks in CL could get a T score of 35 ( if std dev is 10).

But one point to note is that Grades can be to be moderated too.

Ok, DS is gonna have MT stuffed down his throat now :frustrated:

there was a major outcry when the former education minister previously casually suggested to reduce weightage of MT in PSLE tscore....the PM and the then EdnM had to jointly hold press conference to assure the public they are equal weightage.....

MOE website still had the relevant press release I guess

MT's weightage has been a very touchy issue, tantamount to sacrilege if any how change !

                      politically suicidal...

Parents whose children qualify for exemption of MT should definitely opt for exemption. There are students who do very well when they do not have to take MT. But I do notice that its usually the parents who have the financial ability and time - so able to get diagnosis promptly - whose children get the exemption. This is from the handful of people I heard so may not be meaningful data. Hope to hear there are cases where schools do the intervention.
