Dunman High School (Junior High)

DD1 told me level briefing is in February but it clashes with DD2ās school briefing as well. Any idea what the DHS Level briefing will entail - are notes available online for download so I can skip it ? Advice from DHS parents who have attended such briefing will be helpful ! Thanks

I missed level briefing once and DHS actually printed a small information booklet with all relevant information which will be given to your DD sometime after the level briefing(or your DD can just ask from the ushers on that day). Just ask your DD to listen out for important information and the rest will be just looking at the booklet and clarifying doubts with your DD or the teachers. -

I thought I should pay my dues since I benefited a lot from this forum when my DD applied via DSA (General) to DHS last year. You could also try the other forum DSA 2014 if you want more information on DSA
DD was accepted by DHS via DSA last year and is now attending Sec 1. DHS was my DD's one and only DSA application. We were sceptical initially that she would stand a chance because she was neither extremely strong in Maths or Science (neither participated in any Maths or Science Olympiad) nor in GEP. DD is however strong in languages so we decided to give it a shot under DSA (General) as DD's results meet the minimum criteria of 85% - 90%. You never know until you try!
Your DD will have to take the GAT test (which is a General Ability Test) if she wants to try for DSA. Thereafter, she will be invited to an interview cum English test if DHS accepts her in the first round (i.e. after the GAT test and submission of school results etc).
As a parent, I think it is important that we prep our kids of what to expect in the DSA process and GAT so that they know how to manage their own expectations/priorities. The DSA exercise is not one based solely on academic results but rather one of finding the right fit which is why they have interviews as part of the selection process. Hence, the entire process could drain the kid emotionally and affect his/her PSLE preparation if he or she is not well prepared of the consequences (even more so during the period end August/early Sep when they wait for the confirmation letters while preparing for PSLE). I myself have seen a kid coming out of the exam halls after the GAT test crying when I pick DD up after her test last year because she could not handle a lot of the questions. I have also heard of some who got demoralised because they were not accepted to the schools they DSAed even though they have stellar results. The way I explained to DD if you get in via DSA, it is a bonus! If you don't, you just have to work hard and get the results you need to earn a place in DHS.
To me, it was tough (the emotional roller coaster ride waiting for the confirmation letter while preparing for PSLE, the anxiety every time some other classmate gets the confirmation letter but not your DD) but it was a good experience because DD learned how to stay focused on her PSLE preparation and I think it good training to prep her for Sec 1.
Hope that helps! -
