DSA 2017

My kids did not join any CCA. CCA not compulsory in their primary school.
Submitted other credentials eg. competitions awards/medals, music cert, volunteer work, school projects, etc. Both via academic domain. -
Thank you everybody for the advise. Highly appreciated! ^_^

I believe there have already been a few responses, however I still would like to make this point haha. If the student were to drop their CCA and happened to be asked about it during the DSA interview, s/he would be in quite a bad situation as the interviewers would likely question why s/he was unable to cope with CCA while preparing for the PSLE and possibly look unfavourably upon it because secondary school is even more hectic. So, I would definitely urge you to let your child continue with his/her CCA!
Reason being : want to better focus & totally concentrate for PSLE - is it a valid reason?
And what is the school mark range for subject domain (Eng, or Math) in order to be consider good? Eg. Is 85% & above acceptable? Or the selection criteria only look at 90% & above range?
Thanks! -
Hi mononoke,
Thanks for your advice! I was thinking likewise too. Better stay with the CCA just in case… -
Hi, may I know for gep students, do they stand good chance of getting CO from RI or HCI if they do not have any competition awards? As my DS is not keen in competitions and he is average in gep, I am deciding whether to get him interested in MO and or to focus on PSLE?
Thanks in advance! -

It is good to have MO but not necessary to go for it as it does not provide a CO in this aspect. Aside from the academic results / GAT if required, I personally think the DSA interview plays a vital role to determine the selection process. I know during DD's time in 2014, 7 Geppers in her school were unsuccessful in RGS despite having having good grades. In NYGH, the unsucessful rate was higher than expected as their selection process was not looking for grades with flying colors.
As long yr DS is articulative in presenting his thoughts rationally and logically, it will certainly earn him an extra edge. If he is not keen with competition, I would not encourage him to go for it. Be on his own and focus well on P6 SA1 and PSLE. Best of luck to yr DS. -

My dd plan to dsa Chinese dance, but she does not has Chinese language. May I know of any secondary schools in the west has niche in dance?
:thankyou: -
Dear parents, DS just finished his PSLE hence I thought of providing some feedback. DSA is a 2 edged sword. DSA is really a great initiative as it relieve the stress of parents and students from the uncertainty of PSLE results, and most importantly, the hassle of screening through 6 choices in the S1 exercise.
However, if your child is consistently showing good results, I would propose only applying for the DSA of only 1 school he really want to go, or even not to apply DSA at all. My son applied DSA Academics of a IP school (School A) he really like, and another IP school (School B) near our place which I proposed. He got WL from School A and CO from School B. He is in a dilemma of his DSA selection - I can sense his worry that his WL may not be converted and he will go into School B, yet after much consideration, he decided to place WL from School A as first choice and CO from School B as 2nd choice.
When the school results came out, he did well enough to go to any school. We are blessed that his WL is converted but there is always a worry that if it is not converted, he will be in School B. After the results are out, I then asked him what if he is posted to School B (I didn’t want to add his anxiety in the first place and being a matured boy, he made his own decisions), he told me he will accept the decision and will still work hard.
I want to stress that both School A and School B are good IP schools but there is a preference for my boy. So even if he said he will still work hard, I am sure there will be a certain regret that he could have go into his preferred choice using his T score. And there are "branded" Schools which everyone is telling me DS should go.
Parents, what I am trying to say is our child may just be 12 years old, but there is a certain maturity and preference in their mind. We should work out the options with them and make a choice which we will never regret. All the best to your DC for DSA 2017. Without regrets, I will be trying for DSA again in 2018 for my DD but this time, it will definitely a more experienced process. -
Oh My Gosh:
