For those whose kids perform regularly well & might choose a 3rd language, may I suggest occupying this long s h holiday with starting language learning of choice to help them get accustomed & ease into new term. Caution is yr child shld be keen. Most drop out of 3rd language in the 1st year if there’s no sustaining interests or lack support.

Learning a 3rd language opens doors to cultural exchanges for personal & professional relationships & it helps the learner become successful learners. The brain develops further as the brain networks become better integrated & our kids acquire faster & more efficient learning learning skills. It develops the part of the brain for connectivity.

      http://www.sciencealert.com/here-s-how-learning-a-new-changes-your-brain-at-any-age

The parts that develop in size were the hippocampus, a deep-lying brain structure that is involved in learning new material and spatial navigation, and three areas in the cerebral cortex.

Different parts of the brain develop to different degrees depending on well the learner performs and how much effort they put in.

I posted in RV link below but no response so just want to ask if any one here knows.

Son getting psle result this coming thurs. I read in previous RV posting, the Chinese standard in RV is high. Does student still require to read 四大名著 each year starting sec 1, periodically ( how often ) write chinese books review , read Chinese article weekly? Please share more about the Chinese study needed. Thanks

I have heard from some primary school teachers who have seen the PSLE exam papers for 2018 that the level of difficulty for this year was lower than previous years. What could be the possible implication on the results and the cut off points for the secondary school posting?

              It depends on cohort size.

If psle was easy, then expect higher cut off. I think.

                Mathematically, since the T-score formula is T = 50 + 10(X-Y)/Z
                where X = student's score, Y = average score, Z = standard deviation of cohort

So if the paper is easy => higher average scores (Y) across the cohort
                => lower T-scores in general

If 2018 PSLE papers are easier, compared to past years, means

Many pupils tend to do well, expect bumper harvest crop of students done well this year, because their Total Raw score summated (4 subjects), will be very high.

But not sure after treatment, what will happen to their moderated T-score, based on entire P6 cohort performance (a few thousands of P6 students), taken PSLE ?

                  Consequences ? Does it mean
Fiercer, more intense competition into Top ( IP , O-level) schools, for the remaining (balance, left-behind) seats left after DSA, leading to higher Cut-off point entry ?

                  Eg

If RGS Cut-off point in the past used to be 260 or 261, then this year maybe higher than 261 ?

T-Score is not some hocus locus Hogwarts magic. It’s just a normalized result. The curve looks the same year to year, regardless of the difficulty of the paper. Therefore, difficulty of the paper has no bearing on the COP of any particular school. Assuming demand / supply remains constant, COP should remain the same.

However, easy paper does make it harder to distinguish those students in the middle of the normal distribution since they will all bunch up. Therefore, a single point raw score difference may have a significant difference in terms of getting a A or B. Expect to see some surprises in the final results (and careless students may be penalized).

All subjects or just Maths (which I heard)?

Plus minus 1 to 2 points when selecting school, based on past year cut off.
