Hi reading the recent posting it seems the boys are no longer sorted into mixed ability and higher ability class anymore? Is that toght? So all classes remain as in since they join P1?

There is no more higher ability class(es). The 9 classes of 2018 P2s just finished their SA2 and they were reshuffled into 7 P3 classes of ~39 each. All mixed ability classes.

As for future batches, since MOE has removed exams for future P1 and P2s, I don’t know how they will be reorganized in P3. In every school there is some reshuffling in P3 because the class size will go up to 40 max.

Sorry I don’t know. I got my info at the group parents breakfast session with the Principal at the beginning of the year.

Maybe you can wait for the latest P4 news at next January’s session.

Just to share, for those parents who will hv kids entering P1, you can play a positive & constructive way to contribute to yr child’s learning journey. We had fathers who either took time off fr work to give short talks on professions during library/recess hours or mums volunteering in various aspects for kids’ activities - chaperones during excursions, Prayer groups for PSLE students, library readup programs, games, craftwork, etc. We had one pilot who came in his awesome uniform to give a talk & we proceeded to do craftwork of folding or building aeroplanes with the boys! Ano father wld use his lunch hour to volunteer checking out books for the boys. These are parents who give selflessly to the community their boys learn in. It’s one school you can’t do PV to get a place, but once in, you’ll see the kind of dedication in a hive of various activities & degree of dedication.

We had a few mums who hv specialized skills to help coach special learning needs kids. Their effort are not known by many in the sch coz of the nature to keep low profile of these kids’ needs, but when I came to know the few mums, I was very touched by the values many mums try to share, model and extend. There are many more unsung heroes who will need your kind participation if u hv the time, such as those shy mums who work behind the scene stacking books, repairing & stitching books, etc.

A lot of activities are happening thro the library where parents volunteer to take on coaching for kids’ English oral practices before exams esp for the weaker students. The English HOD is always appreciative of volunteers to spend time practicing with kids after school hours.

The CL std has also improved over the years under the HOD Ms Kuah & her highly capable & dedicated team & Mdm Lam. The year we registered for P1, we were concern bcoz we heard many parents on the poor performance, but that year, the school’s CL grades were very good & we just go by faith.

Other than one year, where DS had a hiccup with a CL teacher for 2 terms! When the HOD took over for next 2 terms, the grades all went up to A & A* as DS says she’s got very interesting way of inspiring them during CL. This HOD had tried to improve the teaching style of a teacher transferred fr a neigbourhood sch with attitude problems & his teaching improved thereafter.

I’ve contributed my part with the CL team to device fun CL games & playing CL videos at the sch library during recess time & many kids enjoyed puzzle in forming CL sentences & other games for lower & upper primary levels. In fact, many parents contributed towards doing up a home-setting with sofa at a corner of the library & kids enjoy reading Chinese materials (comics or novels) in that comfy corner with big night curtains contributed & cut-out windows, etc. Kids were limited to borrow 2 English medium books, there is no limit to any number of Chinese medium books (this incl comics, videos, storybooks, novels, etc) in an effort to encourage readership. In fact, one mum asks to visit this library for the successful way its run to bring these ideas to MGS.

The CL std is continuously upkept midst the changes & transfers of teachers.

Hope new parents can come in to contribute your time & talents with your young chaps running to the library where u are doing craftwork, readups, games, etc. Keep up the good work for a good learning environment for your child!

Not forgetting Uncle Jek and Auntie Maggie, the tireless and extremely dedicated school librarians, who have made the library a welcoming place for the boys to hang out at all times of the day.

The atmosphere is so completely different from a normal NLB public library, where our active boys are shushed all the time and where even any talking is frowned upon. That kind of stifling atmosphere is what turned off my son from reading when younger. And the school’s welcoming library with its congenial atmosphere is what encourages my son to hang out and read, or even just play Chess/Lego with his friends.

I agree with Estee on the school support system. Parents volunteer to chaperones during excursions, prayer group during exam especially during PSLE (this is most sought after), parents volunteer to give oral practices to PSLE kids (this is also most sought after, as some parents take this opportunity to learn the techniques introduced by the the school teachers and HOD).

Apart from the parents volunteers (which sometime is so full), that some parents teamed up among themselves to give supports as well. Sometime we chaperones kids to home and classes, sometime we even teamed up to give oral practice on our own. Sometime, we teamed up to give class party at the end of the year.

The culture at ACSJ is not competitive like cut-throat. If you ask for help, there are folks who will help out. I enjoyed the PSLE Eng and Chinese oral so much, that some kids from other levels will join in with their PSLE korkor.

Yes, Uncle Jek! Our tireless father-figure for the boys. A cosy, welcoming place the boys keep returning to childhood memories even after leaving (whenever I see them visiting in sec sch uniforms)

It’s so wonderful to see Aunty Maggie’s working thro her age & kept active & inspire of her falls. It’s like having my kids, ya mums & the father-figure uncle Jek & grandma Maggie (3 generations) whenever the boys come round (recess or after school). I know for many FTWP, they feel safe to hv their kids ‘watched’ over before they cld pick their kids up. Don’t u think it’s a little like an after-school care Centre? :rotflmao: I used to share with working parents to get their boys up to wait at library rather than ran ard wild at the foyer, whilst waiting for parents. Some boys had to wait till 3pm for mums to finish work!

I’m surprised I also missed the fellowship and coffee & chats at the quiet repair table behind the librarian. :gloomy: It’s such a wonderful bonding place for both kids & parents that I find it hard to ustand when my MGS frd said she cldnt get her P to approve a similar setup. Not even when we gave her ‘bullets’ of high library readership amongst Spore’s Pri sch statistics to convince.

I wished for all Pri schools to hv such a Library setup that encourages positive & constructive mutual contribution for our young to learn.

I’m sure for neigbourhood schools, there’ll be more who wld be able to walk over to kids sch to contribute an hour or so, just to be with their kids. How I wished all our young kids hv cosy environment in all Spore Pri schools.
