DD is selected both for Maths Olympiad training and Chinese Creative Writing class but she is rejecting both! Sigh, I feel it will be good training grounds but she dun like, so nothing I can do. I can’t force her to attend. In primary school, she also reject the E2K class and Maths Olympiad training.
Parents, how can I make my girl be more “self competitive”? To push herself to want to learn more? -

Well done WhatThe! Tell her your expectations directly? \"I'd like to see you take up at least 1 more course this year\"... -
My gal didn't want to take up MO at P5 upon hearing from me that P5 will be a tougher year as she did not want any distraction for fear of doing badly at P5. She took up MO at P6 after I told her to pursuit her interests regardless of the academic results.
Is it bec your DD has the same fear? If so, your reassurance to her may help her overcome her physiological barrier of doing badly in her sch work if she takes up these extra activities. What The:

Oh mine! :scared: That’s a lot for me to digest right now.
SiA - Student Initiated Assignment. Examples of SIAs are Innovation Program (IvP), Maths Research Programme (MRP),Odyssey of the Mind (OM), Humanities Talent Development Programme (HTDP), World Scholar's Cup (WSC).Ganjiongspider:

What is SIA? :scratchhead:
In Sec 2, some students will be identified & selected for IvP, MRP, & HTDP based on their Sec 1's strong subject, MSG & teacher's recommendation. I am not sure OM & WSC fall under what subject, but heard this 2 programs are like through student's application, and undergo selection trials.
In Sec 3, SIA is compulsory and all students have to be in 1 SIA as part of the graded component (but not counted in MSG).
I need to study thru one by one as I notice the way NYGH runs, it is so different from my DD1’s sec school.
Yesterday DD2 received an email to get her to select an activity under Talent Development Prog meant for those DSA via Bilingual. That was fast, I thought. DD2 picked Creative Writing. There’s also 猜灯谜, which she classified as “mission impossible”! :rotflmao:
From your post, I see that your girl is developing very well under the Biling Prog too, which reassures me.
[/quote]Actually tbh, for her batch who dsaed via Bilingual, there are no compulsory program for them to take up. As far as I know, like Creative Writing, Emcee training, newspaper reporting etc those who are interested can sign up for it. My dd didnt sign up for all the above. My dd is developing well so far, but not under the Bilingual program. Lol!

How do the Sec 1 girls get selected, for MO training ?
Is it because they scored A* in PSLE (Maths) subject, or because they had DSA in, by Maths academic domain ? -
My girl’s answer is always she is just plain lucky to get selected. She is the worst of the selected group hence no point going since she won’t get selected for the competition anyway. Worse still, she may not understand what the tr is teaching since those girls are very smart. So why waste time, even though I encourage her there will be no waste of time since there will sure have takeaway points.

Ya, she herself is keen to go. I asked her to “let go” after heeding my friend’s advice. Selected for training doesn’t mean will win in competition as MO prizes are usually swept up by the boys. Girl just stare at me for a long time, :skeptical: I guess she understood what I mean...
Not really. Last year, 5 out of top 10 in SMO Junior were girls. In fact, top 3 were all girls! -
Any advice on cca selection? I realise after eliminating sports, performing arts and UG, seems like nothing very much left to choose? Help help!!

I was surprised to see that Biling kids are invited to do interesting activities like these. Huh, why never sign up for any of the above? It sounds fun to me. I urged my girl to go for this 猜灯谜 (4 lessons) but she said her Chinese standard not there, she really can’t.

I read that your girl was selected for the Humanities Talent Development Prog! Congrats! Hmm... Hard to say, my DD1 DSAed via Science but she now tells me she enjoys Literature etc more.
The other day DD1 asked me a million dollar question, subject A she can score well but no interest, subject B she has interest but can’t really score well. Which one should she pick for next year. I told her just be practical!
