My opinion is ...
I don't think it's a matter of which school is better.dagong99\" post_id=\"1925896\" time=\"1564718679\" user_id=\"48163:
This is something else i wanted to ask from all the experienced people here... Have heard many people who get selected in NUS, leave it for Raffles? Do u think Raffles is better than NUS? In what sense ?
Rather, it's a matter of which school suits the child more and whether the child will thrive in that school.
In any case, both schools are great schools.
If your child is fighting for government scholarships or US universities ... RI is likely going to be better
If your child is good in everything including CCA/leadership ... RI is likely going to be better
If your child is lob-sided to Maths and Science ... NUSH is likely going to be better
For the other, I think more of what your child inspire to be
RI mission is Nurturing thinkers, leaders and pioneers of character who serve by leading and lead in serving.
... I interpret as Harvard, scholar, Minister, and etc
NUSH mission is Inspire and shape the future of education in mathematics and science. Future-ready Pioneers, Humanitarians and Innovators for the world ... I interpret as A*STAR, MIT, NASA, Steve Job, Einstein
Very apt description of NUS High!!!
My DC is having a wonderful journey in NUSH and been inspired to expand the horizons in the maths and sciences. 😄
NUSH is doing a great job nurturing these young minds. Never in our wildest dreams did we expect DC to represent Singapore in 2 Olympiad subjects.
DC and fellow schoolmates were the top team and second team in SPSO and NMOS for their year. The other schoolmates, were slightly more talented than DC, had gone to an elite school after PSLE but since then, had never come across them in the Olympaids. Perhaps they are leading and serving in other fields! -
DC is very happy in NUSH as they are nurtured and stretched to “experiment , explore and excel “. Given his interests and natural curiosity, this is the best school to develop him to his full potential. Aside from SOTA, it is the only IP school that has a small student teacher ratio across ALL classes. Opportunities are given to everyone who wants to try whereas the mainstream schools only give opportunities to a chosen few they think can win medals to the competitions.
I want to caveat that I do not speak up for NUSH just because of home bias that DC is there. We are a family with 3 gens of Rafflesians ( RGS, RI and RJC) and Hwa Chong ( HCI And HCJC ) so we do in a way have some qualified perspectives. Of course, it is just our personal opinions as what is current we glean from our friend’s kids who are back in our alumnis.
R and H are the best mainstream schools with a Long track record and the kids there are no doubt high achievers - you thrive if you are all rounder and/or extremely motivated to scale heights in leadership / sports / S papers / Olympiads etc
From what I observe NUSH kids are slightly off the road where they likely have extreme comparative advantage in the math/ science / logic… it will be common for them to get into a game of Football and start debating on the projectile curve angles of the balls; nevermind who wins . NUSH kids know they are smart so they don’t seem to need to have to prove anything else …, thus, you see a few extremely ass lazy ones there. You will find instances of those who just prep for some Olympiad a day or two earlier ; then go on to get a Silver or Bronze. Case in point are the Golds are populated by NUSH, RI And HCI and then you See truckloads of silvers bronzes hon mentions from
NUSH too.
Most of them seem to have a quiet confidence as they seem to be aware of their strengths but yet, acknowledge there are others who are more driven/talented in chosen areas.
The R types will likely be hell bent to win the recess Football /Basketball ( RGS) game at all costs. There is a necessity to compete on all fronts there given that they need to clear an internal selection screen to be able to get further opportunities. The school has a competitive advantage in all areas as a result. This is why then the best of breed represents the school to go on to medal in every arena. What you see headlighted are the top 10 percentile of the cohort and it blinds out what happens to the lower quartile given the cohort is into 800s by y6.
The H types need to be strong in Chinese and there are a lot more Brother/sisterhood bonds which last decades. Take for example the Hwa Chong 100th year reunion recently where the alumni pulled together to cut a song and a 12k attendance !
I would agree that R and H is kinda like your Harvard /Yale/Oxbridge while the NUSH is like your MIT /Imperial /Caltech (newer additions when STEM became more developed as our economies advanced from the Industrial Revolution into the Y2K century)
NUSH is still a relatively new school at 14 yrs old but you will observe that it is advancing in the right direction with the recent Olympiad /University acceptance trends. There is now a greater proportion of quality medal winners out of NUSH and if this trend continues , the older age categories will also reflect this trend as long as NUSH remains as the school of choice. -
