As the school is specialised in Maths and Science, what if half way thru the course the child realise his or her passion lies in humanities, what are the options available?
As they are only 12 year old kids, what they like now might not be so in the future. This is one of the thing i worried.
Am afraid your options are fairly limited.
From Year 4 to 6, they have to do 3 compulsory major (Math and 2 Science subjects), and 1 optional major (another science or 1 of the humanities subjects). Given the distribution, you have to ensure that you continue to do well with the math and science, and graduate before you can make the switch / pursue your passion in University. -

Anyone can share PE standard in NUSH? I think it is very important for kids to develop physically. My Son and I like NUSH curriculum very much. However, I am a bit worried if the culture is not PE inclined. :?

Yeah…luckily we do not need to make a decision now. I told DS we will discuss and think through after PSLE.
Every decision we make now will affect the child future. And it’s up to us parents to explain the pro and con and help him make a decision. -

2 years ago when it was time to pick a school for DD1, my close friends advised me against NUSH. My girl later DSAed using Science to another IP school. My girl’s languages are not strong in the primary school days so I thought she would be a Maths and Sc person. To my surprise, girl’s telling me History, Geography, Literature are very interesting.

We brought DD1 to the NUSH open house and the volunteer we met just graduated from NUSH but he decided not to pursue a degree related to Maths and Sc.
Maybe overwhelming exposure to Maths and Sc?
I agree with the rest, you must know your child well. If I examine my DD1 closely, she was doing well for her maths/Sc probably because I wanted her to do well in PSLE. But other than that, I do not see her a Maths/Science fanatic.
I remember there was a period of time when making Slime was an “in thing”. My DD1 made many many types of slime to play/sell. There was another classmate who actually made slime to bake and record what chemical reaction took place at what temperature. The slime baking experiment was later chosen for the school’s exhibition! The girl is now in NUSH. Simple anecdote to highlight the different attitudes towards Sc -

I only can say jack of all trades, master none. People are interesting, always hoping to choose paths that likely have the most opportunities but may not be ready when the opportunity is presented to them.
How many parents are happy and supportive if their kids are going to specialize in history, Art, or literature in university? So be open on what are the good courses in the university that parents are happy with… and what subject combinations get there. I was told even like accountancy, more than half are from science streams just because it is easier to get A in the science than art.
If you are saying I will prefer my kids to go to said Nan Hua secondary school then NUSH (I am not saying it is bad just that the two school are opposite each other) then I would really think that the parents are concerned about their kids in specializing too early. If the parent is comparing RI or RGS with NUSH… I think it is more about which school sound better.
Sorry if it sounds harsh and controversial, I know how it feels as we have gone through it and when I kept asking myself why not NUSH or why RI, I found that it was because it is RI, all the other reasons is created just because it is RI, and when I changed it to comparing another more normal school, I have no concern about the so call early specialization, and the choice becomes clear. Letting DS to choose based on his passion and be responsible and push forward regardless of the outcome, is a more important lesson in their life than study itself.
