Yes, when they first started in January there will be a test conducted by the Chinese department. If ur child meets the criteria he/she can take HCL. Only those with CL A* or HCL merit needs not go thru the hassle.
Thank you very much for your kind feedback! I am a little bit surprised to know the test is before they start Sec one. My kid may forget his CL during the holiday:P

Oh ! This is Excellent, GOOD news !

By letting students sit for entrance Chinese subject test early in the beginning of January Term 1, this will greatly benefit Sec 1 pupils, as it means that they can have an early head start into HCL, for those who pass (clear) the entrance test,

compared to some other Secondary schools that do not provide such similar Chinese entrance tests in January. In contrast, only when students reach the End of their Sec 1, then based on their (Standard Chinese results + overall year end Sec 1 results), then allow them to Appeal to study HCL (Sec 2).

But by then, isn't it a bit late, because this means that pupils would have already missed out, lost out one precious, valuable long year of studying HCL ?

Why is TKSS one, the correct, right strategy (approach) ?

Because

Learning a language, takes time.
One cannot simply master a language, overnight.
It is bit by bit, slowly \"accumulated\", over a long period of time. Han yu pin yin : \"xue yu yan, shi man man de lei ji \". That's how language works. Thus, the earlier one start, the better !

Moreover, HCL (in Secondary school), is a lot more challenging & tougher than HCL ( in primary school, at P5 and P6).
Even if one score Merit or Distinction in primary school HCL, +2 or +3 bonus points, doesn't mean can sail through easily in HCL, Secondary school

Kudos,
to Tanjong Katong Secondary school Principal, VP (Academic section), Chinese HOD and all Chinese teachers inside Chinese department, for being understanding and kind enough, to let PSLE students have a second chance, by offering Sec 1 pupils learn HCL early

This shows that TKSS care for her students.
TKSS show empathy, \"hen hao\" (very good)
very few Secondary schools conduct entrance test, for those want to take HCL.
Many schools \"can't be bothered\" to walk the extra mile, by conducting Chinese test. After that, still got to mark some more. Many schools just conveniently rely on MOE letter.

I :salute:

let's give TKSS
A big round of applause < clap hands >

===========================

Dear busymum0607,

this last month of December 2019 holiday, do prepare your son / daughter for entrance Chinese test.
Go for it, jia you (x3) ! Wish your child, all the very, very best !

My child put 1st choice as TKSS. May I Know if there is any chance to be offered HMT if the PSLE score is not qualified HMT condition? Like based Sec one year end exam result?
Personally I know of one who is not from TKSS but from another Sec school. She took HMT in p5 but drop the subject at end of P5 after P5 SA2. The reason was she wanted to focus on her 4 core subjects for PSLE. In Sec 1, she was not offered HMT but parents requested that Sec school allows her to study HMT again. She did not sit for any HMT entrance test and Sec school approve her to study HMT. It is still up to the principal or HOD Chinese head to approve.
Hi

Hows the school? Any insights on the Arts dept/programs? thx u!

There is an online petition for the current principal to be out of tkss. Not sure what’s the story behind it. :siam:

I believe it's because she removed alot of the sch activities that students felt was important and basically removed the fun out of the sch n made it too academically focused. Some students feels that she's ruining the sch n taking the life of the sch away I guessed :yikes: :frustrated:
The principal removed the school's Sports Day.

Anyone applied for DSA to Tanjong Katong and has experience to share?

Category 1: STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics)
Applicants should demonstrate strong interest and drive to excel in STEM.
Have portfolio or other indicators that demonstrate aptitude and passion for STEM, attitude for Inquirybased learning.
Achieved consistent and excellent results for Mathematics and Science in Primary 5 (Overall results) and
Primary 6 Mid-Year exam (overall) results.

We're also looking at it but what I don't understand is why they accept Science DSA as they don't seem to have any special programmes for Science.

TKSS focuses on Math. They send their talented students to Math Olympiad competition.
There's no representative from TKSS for Science Olympiad .

Can i chk if TKSS keeps parents involved or aware of wat is happening to their child may it be good students or average students? Is the school a caring school?? What is the support given for students that meeded help?

I have a daug in a nearby school Sec 3, tat does not focus much on getting parents involved. Eg this year covid, totally no meet parents. Not even zoom or phone calls to update on kids well being!
No cohort briefing. Only newslettwr via PG. This is really ridiculous n unacceptable.

Does anyone know if a boy coming in not through DSA has a chance to get into the football team? My son applied but didn’t even get an interview. He has been playing since K2.

I think the obvious answer is no one can really tell you the answer.

Apart from students coming in via DSA (1) and those in sec 2 (2) next year, No one knows who else will be in the team. Assuming (1) and (2) together aren’t enough to form the first eleven (and there’s an issue of having subs), the team will naturally have to look anyone else coming in not through DSA. Similarly, if your son is playing in a position that the team is lacking, he will have a good chance of being in the team.
