My daughter's in Yr2 now. There are many programs available for all students to participate in. Most of these programs have entry-tests. For some like Lit Mentorship, it is compulsory for DSA bilingual students to attend but the tests are also open to other students who may be interested. Entry into the program is still by merit. This also applies for the Humanities programme/ scholarship and those other Yr3 subject combinations. Note: there are other criteria for those programmes, eg. you may need to take Advanced Humanities or some other subject if you apply for those. Briefing for subject combo is during Yr2.
Any parents with DD that had DSA into NYGH via bilingualism domain can share their DD experience? In particular, what are the activities/projects/subjects that your DD must go through towards the DSA commitment? Though I have read through the DSA-bilingualism section at NYGH, I'm still not sure exactly what student will learn/cultivate under NYGH programme as compared to that of St Nicks. St Nicks' page https://chijstnicholasgirls.moe.edu.sg/secondary/learning-at-st-nicks/key-programmes/sap-flagship-programme is relatively quite clear. NYGH page mentioned that students are encouraged to apply for \"the special programmes: Secondary 2 Literature Mentorship Programme, Upper Secondary Humanities Programme, Upper Secondary Bicultural Studies Programme and Chinese Language Elective Programme\" and students are selected into these programmes based on their strengths. Does this mean that the DSA commitment is only for 2 years as nobody can predict the future especially if it is based on merit in upper secondary years? Just want some sensing before deciding on the commitment.
There was one other program that was open to DSA bilingual students this year - some presentation workshop. But they only managed to attend the briefing before Covid stuck and I guess that has been cancelled for the year.
Similarly, there will also be other tests/ programs from other domains that are open to all students, eg Australian Math Competition. I assume that for those Math DSA students, it may be compulsory for them to attend while optional for others.
DSA commitment is still for the 6 years - she cannot change schools and this is IP all the way to Yr6 in HCI. But your daughter will be free to choose any CCA in Yr1 and join any program she wants, including from other domains as long as she clears the selection criteria for the CCA/ program. She does not have to join BSP or CLEP in Yr 3 and can even join Humanities program if she develops an interest in that area. She can also not join any special programs and just take the usual 8-9 subject combo in Yr 3. -

Hi mommyNg,
GJS, I happened to know one student who took 8 subjects in Sec 3 (double science double Humanities) with Bio, Chem, History, who was asked to drop Bio by the end of Sec 3 (she couldn’t hit MSG 4 and she had to retake papers in Nov). So yes, in the end she ended up with 7 subjects in Sec 4: LA, HCL, 2 Math, Chem, History, and IH. But that was 3 years ago so maybe things have changed now. I don’t mean anything, just sharing what I know.Ganjiongspider\" post_id=\"1994648\" time=\"1599883026\" user_id=\"102810:
Hi SWC,
Thank you for sharing.
Though I am pretty sure no dropping of any subject if the student is allocated to 8-subj combi., cause very risky to have exactly 7 subjs to study; coz promotion criteria to JC is exactly looking at 7 subjs. So let's say if you score very badly with IH, die die also must use IH to add to the MSG, no other additional humanities subj to replace it, so in way, no other option. There's why I remembered seeing the footnote stated with L2R5, a student must take 8 subjs, which is the min. requirement. But with 9 subj-combi, I thought the school should have room for consideration? Coz still have the 8 subj in the end, which is the standard requirement in Y4.
Anyway, how about any parents ever tried to apply for withdrawing for any specific subject, and if it accepted or rejected by the school before?
Thank you for sharing... ^_^ -

Hi swc,
There is very little \"commitment\" in the sense that with the exception of two activities, all the rest of the activities are on a \"encourage to attend\" basis. The DSA Bilingual had to help out in a outreach programme to primary school kids and another workshop conducted by a Chinese author. There were many other programmes/workshops but those were opened to all students, not just the dsa students. Certain programmes like the Lit Mentorship programme, students have to sit for selection tests. It was compulsory for DSA bilingual students to sit for the selection test but whether they get selected depends on their performance during the selection test.choowt\" post_id=\"1994752\" time=\"1599932423\" user_id=\"10356:

Thanks for the info. Couple with the info from swc, I now have a better idea about the bilingual programme in NYGH. Will discuss with DD after PSLE exam on whether to proceed or not. -
May i ask parents with DD dsa in maths domain into NYGH previous few years, roughly how many spots were given?
TIA -
Can someone remind me. To take advanced math or advanced science in Sec3, is the criteria set at min 85 marks on average? I thought that was for eligibility into the SMTP?

To take advanced maths, need 85% in Sec 2 Integrated Maths, pass selection test, teacher's recommendation. Bonus if good performance in SMO, AMC.

For Advanced sciences, additionally need to have MSG 1.5 or less.
For SMTP: Students who offer 2 Advanced Sciences or 1 Advanced Science and Advanced Mathematics will be considered for this programme. Students must pass the selection tests and interviews for the Advanced Science and/or Advanced Mathematics. -

Anyone’s DD in HSSRP? Would like to know if receive invite for this programme, do the girls still have to go through another round of selection test? How heavy is the time commitment?
