You know the outcome of your ...daughter... DSA offer results, so fast !

      Hi too, Singkiasu, Congrats!!!

I've a JC1 kid, even though he made his own decisions, these were some aspects I had researched... to start off...
      (1) Is there any subject or subject combination which your dd prefers (the individual colleges have published some related info on their websites)?

      (2) How are the colleges' promotional criteria or JC2 subject criteria (for instance, would the student be made to drop a subject if certain grades are not met at the end of JC1, which I'd use to gauge how supportive the college is towards students who are not performing that well, how about qualifying for H3 subjects)?

      Congratulations once again!

Thank you! But we are facing a huge dilemma on which school to choose. We are weighing the pros and cons but we are still indecisive on which school to choose.

Congratulations once again![/quote]Thanks. Yes! I've asked my DD to make her own decision. Analyse pros & cons(esp. distance & culture)Regarding academic rigour both are in the same boat. Will look into the two points, which you've shared. Thank you once again :salute:

HCL's bar is innately high by local standards because it is meant to test locals' ability and proficiency at the native speaker level.

For those whose kids are planning to take A level Econs, or want to investigate Econs, I have an old Econs A level textbook to give away (details below). It's a clean, used copy.

              https://books.google.com.sg/books/about/Economics.html?id=kZm-MgEACAAJ&redir_esc=y

NOTE: It's the 8th edition (2012), and the latest edition is the 10th (2018).

My daughter took H2 and H3 Econs, but hardly used the book at all as JCs give lots of notes and readings already. It was more for security! She's finally clearing it out as she's starting her final year in university and is sure she will not look at it again. It might be useful for a student who isn't sure whether to take Econs or not, or just wants to read a bit in advance. The basics will be OK, but some examples may be out of date, I guess.

PM me if you want it. Self-collect at Queenstown MRT, day and time to be arranged.

Hi, my dd is deciding on her A level combi at the moment. She most probably choose H2 Math/Chem/Geog but was in a dilemma if she should continue her E lit or take up Econ. May I know is it good to take up Econ at A Level now cos my concern is that she can still learn Econ in U later if she decided to go into Business course. Would there be any different or will it affect her chance of selecting any course of her choice if she take either E lit or Econ?

Hope to have some advise from any parents or students here. TIA

My dd1 did H2 econs (she attempted H3 econs for a couple of months before deciding to drop out as from results pov, it doesn't value add). Now in uni year 1, she said the econs in uni only added few other topics vs A levels. So what she did in JC prep her well for it. She has a project mate who is doing econs for the first time and he struggled with the subject even the fundamentals. if your dd is open to business course, she might want to consider doing econs now than later.

I agree with MMM - doing Econs at A levels does help in the basics in university. My daughter is also studying Econs at university, and having the grounding makes things easier, especially as she would much rather be doing other activities than just studying! Another way to look at it is that ELit is easy to DIY - she can just do the reading in her spare time. My daughter read some of the books that her friends taking ELit did, so she could talk about them with her friends. But in terms of course selection, I don't think it makes a different whether she takes ELit or Econs. It's the quality of the grade (A,B,C etc) that matters more for admittance.

Thks MMM and slmkhoo. Yes, I do agreed that itโ€™s an advantage to take econ now and have less struggle later in Uni if she were to take up business related course. Thatโ€™s why we are weighing the choice base on interest or a subject that would help and lighten her load in the future.

My dd is an avid reader and true she love discussing the content of books thus taking up E lit this far. She is quite open to both but to further E lit in A level would be a new challenge for her as what she told me. Thus I assume her heart is more lean towards E lit. I told her to follow her heart and study a subject of her interest seem a natural choice and will ultimately produce good result.๐Ÿ˜ฌ๐Ÿค”

So far she still not sure what course to pursue in Uni and also if the choice of combi would affect her chance in Uni. Thks for clearing my doubts and did feel more assure now.
