Application for NUS/NTU Medicine 2021/2022

I guess RP87.5 and above to call for an interview

Dear all, can anyone guide NUS medicine application procedure. Civic tutor reference need to send when lodge the application or later?

By now, those keen in reading med after A lvl, must have clocked some experiences from JC and/or external communities in healthcare, old folks home, etc…
These formed important part of the portfolio, with the other worth mentioning achievement in CCA or awards.
The 500 hundred words essay (not sure still need) about applicant, aspiration, why chose me…
Not sure if it is still the same requirement, there were on-line questionnaire that need to be filled by applicant’s (teacher or someone who can provide write about applicant’s strength) - only after selected for interview/test.
My dd applied to Government Hospital and shadowed a specialist for 3 weeks.
The doctor wrote her the testimonial (part of the submission content), and eventually help her with on-line submission after she was shortlist for interview/tests.
As Dentistry was the 2nd choice in NUS; she managed to get a 2weeks attachment with a dental clinic (the clinic which our family visit)
The young dentist taught her how to use hard-wire (forming some shapes) and tooth-modelling with plasticine.
There were some tests on that, with dimension requirement. I remembered she was smiling after the tests, did not receive offer as she was offered the 1st choice. For those interested in Dentistry, take note of the ‘handy-test’ and get some experience (Go find your family dentist).
Important in any interview; be pleasant, be respectful, eye contact, smile and be the sunshine.
My dd was grilled in 1 of the interview with a LKC prof, she didn’t think she will be offered, but it came.
It is a big thing for these 18 yo, half big not small, but have to fight for a place in a very competitive processes.
So, do encourage some practices on talking to a mirror or someone to build up the contents they have in the head.
We even get doctors (son/daughter of frens) to have a 1-1 chat with dd. End-day, we hope dd is well aware of what she is getting into. As parents, we provide the necessary support/help in their learning path.
Good luck to ALL, enjoy this process no matter what is the end result, there is always an alternative/choice. -

I think usually the civics tutor reference is good to have during the application period, it will be compulsory to have after the interview. So really no need to waste time chasing at the beginning.

Let’s say if the student just meet the cut-off of 87.5, is it advisable to also apply via ABA (ability based admission) to gain a higher chance of being considered?

Just guessing…this year may see some increase in applicants for local med school, pandemic related.
There was this girl being accepted and started yr1 in last intake, that was after she has completed 1 year med school in another continent (she lost 1 yr). Not known how and never ask, probably there were good ground from the school.
ABA is another possible path, if the applicant has proven record representing the country/national level, worth thinking this route. In some cases when normal application path did not yield a call up for interview/test, either take gap year (girl) or serve the NS (boy), or take the ABA path, reapply again next yr. But, once not selected after interview/test, cannot reapply.
Almost like open secret, min 87.5 has a fairly good chance to be call up in normal path.
Between 87.5 - 90RP; the diff isn’t that significant, think of the submission details (achievements other than academic, what makes him/her stands out in the eyes of the screening committee).
Unconfirmed information, every year 2-3k applicants for the limited places.
Roughly 1 in 3 will be offered in those call up cases…
So, 1 step at a time. Decide a path, invest time to prep the submission details with some thoughts…finally, pray. -
Thanks Harrods for the useful advice!
