2023 PSLE Discussions and Strategies (Children born in 2011)

Hi all,
I noticed the average COP in 2021 is generally better (lower) than those in 2022. Will it be risky if we put our choices based on 2022 COP if the COP in 2021 is lower?
Any insight will be really appreciated! -

Not true. For example, check SCGS O level and Crescent girls O level. They moved in opposite directions.

We cant guess anything. Apply and pray to God if you believe in one.
If you can give specific example and AL score, people here may be able to give advice. -

What is your child's opinion? Is she in one of the top classes in her pri sch? Where are her friends going? and those better students are going? She has no preference? I think as parents we must bear in mind decisions concerning our children should be first child-centric. But taking into account of parents considerations.
Dear parents,
Never knew this S1 process is just as stressful but hope everyone arrives at the best decision and choices.
Out of curiosity, does anyone know of any AL4-6 cases who made very conscious decision NOT to go for any of the top schools and more importantly, why?
I personally know of one AL6 who's a foreigner and straight up chose a government IP school because of school fees. Another AL6 is worried because of the potential demanding environment that requires one to always be at the top, they aren't financially well off too and instantly think it's never in their league.
So far, my child said no other kids ever ask who is living in condo or HDB, or landed. No one is asking for each other addresses. No one is asking for each other AL too. Thankfully. She said, it is usually when they take the same transport route that they know which area they are living in. Slowly, they will go out to other destinations for school events and may have to take public transport back on their own, cos it is in the middle of working day. They will know to follow each other to take their routes home. My child has been invited to do group project at someone's home, a few incl myself were not comfortable, hence they will just change to do in school. So in general, it is possible to segregate private life from school life, if one wishes so. When they are deciding food options outside, they will respect each other if one said let's go food court instead. We as parents can take the opportunity to educate our children on how to deal with such situations due to social differences.
Yes, I have come across kid taking my child's report book (left on her desk) to check for results without permission in pri school. This type, can't be helped and we only can explain to our own kid and be forgiving. kids are just kids, they need adults to tell them right from wrong.
My take on top IP schools. R, H or A. The general sensing is that most kids are still aiming for As, even in sec sch to JC level. So many may think that a B is not acceptable. So if they get Cs, I do not know what go on in their minds. Hence the pressure. Many (parents) can say, as long as in IP, just aim for pass. But among the kids, kids with poor results may need proper guidance. A sch tr had told a high performer I know, she has to learn to be \"less perfect\", apparently I think she was referring to group work (as the kids may only know abt getting perfect score for their whole life). Well, this kid is still getting perfect score for maths even in sec sch.
For us, school culture and good fit is more important than IP or O so knowing our children is important. We chose the school for the education that it provides for our child. Since IP means fixing the final 2 years in a specific JC, parents often don't but should think and find out abt the JC they will end up in.
Yes, kids with AL4 should have higher abilities in some areas. Cannot be by meer luck. IP was developed for kids like that to stretch them further. Usually these kids have a mind of their own already and know what they want. U know you child so go through the thinking process together will be helpful for both to understand each other's considerations.
If she is not keen in top IPs, what are the other feasible options for her in her area? Eg. DHS is also a good IP school, even though it is not top top. But students demographics may be no different too. More imptly, having a small group of closer/likeminded friends in school will make a big difference in her school life experience. -

Many thanks for your reply. my DS got an AL9M. When we planned for his choice of school, we realized
1. TJC (2022 cop is 9; 2021 is
2. VS O (2022 cop is 10; 2021 is 9)
This means if we put the two schools as 1st and 2nd choice, there is a chance we may not be able to catch any of them and end up landing at the 3rd choice :scared:
Do you find a valid concern?
Any insights are truly appreciated! -

I am also very curious about why the child of AL 4 applied to a school with a COP of AL22.
Some of the factors to consider
1. Fees
2. Location
3. Alumni network
4. Competition/ Work load
5. CCA choice
6. Great grandfather's aunt/uncle studied there
7. Religion
8. Taking third language or AEP or MEP - in-house Vs travel time
9. Prefer SAP or not
10. IP or O
11. I have bragging rights
There may be other points as well. To each the order of these points will vary.
For me, I will completely ignore point 4, 6, 7, 11. And work with the rest.
I don't quite agree with your \"never in their league\". If you are thinking along the lines, please don't.. you are doing a great disservice to your child
What is the reason behind it?

only difference I can find online is some schools have support (officers)for special needs while other don't. Some schools are barrier-free . For kids under special circumstances, proximity is most important I guess. As expected, different families have different considerations.
I am also very curious about why the child of AL 4 applied to a school with a COP of AL22.

I know an autistic boy was from this sec. Hence the guess. Heard from his mum this school has very good support for special needs children. The boy has done well and graduated from Poly soon going NS. -

May be the parents own a shop and the kid needs to help 2 hrs instead of travelling for 2 hours. Can just sit in the shop and do homework also can. Or help parents in their shop in hawker center. If that is the case, I salute them.
We don't know individual circumstances. -

Kid got PSLE score AL4.
Is it safe to put
MGS IP
NYGH IP
RGS IP
MGS IP only got 120 slots per cohort. Less DSA kids. Perhaps only 100 slots. I wonder if there are alot of AL4s kids registering for MGS IP this year too given the easy PSLE.
Also. NYGH got their affiliation intakes.
RGS seems safer bet with no affiliation.
My only worry is MGS full take up. Then my second and third choices may not materialise as probably filled up by other kids in the round of first choice.
Can share some advice? Thanks -
