2023 PSLE Discussions and Strategies (Children born in 2011)

Actually from facebook postings, ALOT of schools actually went back to the PSLE 2021 levels, some even improved from 2021. The rest maintained last year’s COP. So far I’ve only heard of one school that defied the trend, NJC.

I wonder if the SAP O Level schools saw more applicants due to the Express/G3 only factor (not saying I agree or disagree with this)? People have posted NHHS, CCHM, and AHS; anyone know where NCHS ended up (MSHS also improved)?
If CGS (and TKGS) cut G3 intake by one class, a one AL improvement (harder to get in) doesn't seem like that much. I am surprised the G2 COP for these two schools was AL25. Either no one wants to be the newbie/guinea pig or many weren't even aware this was an option this year?

NCHS was AL12D (2021), AL12 (2022) and AL11M (2023)

Just checked the Edu statistics digest. We have consistently ard 51% of students which are male over the years incl this year. So there is no significant difference in male proportion this year.

Does any one know if my child had AL6 for Chinese should he be in G2 or G3 for mother tongue? Do we get to choose or the teacher? (currently buying the books). Which will have more advantage. Thanks!

Depends on child’s posting group (stream).

If PG3, then default take G3 CL.
If PG2, then default take G2 CL (unless scored AL5 or better; not applicable in your case).
You dont get a choice so dun need think abt advantage.
After sec 1 end-of-year exam, CL teacher will evaluate the child’s results and see whether to upgrade or downgrade the banding. -

To add on to the other reply, if G3 posting group I think AL6 MT gets a choice between G2 or G3 (see Offering Subjects at a less demanding level in the following link).

As for pros/cons, I don't think G2 MT can be used in the L1R5 calculation, although maybe you don't care. I also believe G2 MT is weighted more towards speaking/listening, but please confirm with someone else if the weights really make a difference for you. G2 MT should fulfill the local university requirement.
Good luck. -
Many thanks for the replies! My son is posted under G3 but his chinese is AL6. He really struggles with this and he would be happy if G2 means it is easier. It sounds like he may be able to make a choice either G2 or G3. I think I won’t buy the books yet and check back with the school if he can opt for G2. Thanks again!

As per zac’s mum reply, if his posting group is G3, the default for all his subjects will be G3, regardless of the score of an individual subject. The school will decide at the end of sec 1 whether to switch him to G2 or keep him at G3 for the subject.

Offering subjects at a less demanding level
At the start of Secondary 1 (S1)
For students who offered English, Mathematics and/or Science at Foundation level at PSLE, but are otherwise eligible to take most of their subjects at G3 when entering secondary school, they may choose to take these subjects at a less demanding level (i.e., G2), in consultation with their secondary schools.
Students who face exceptional difficulties coping with their Mother Tongue Languages (MTL) will have the option to offer G1 or G2 MTL. At the start of S1, students can offer MTL at a less demanding level based on the following criteria:
