Newbie setting up a website for the first time
-
When I built my own website ~ 6 years ago, I used Wix.com. It’s quite straight forward. However, I did not use it for online sales but have read that it has such functionality.

@chenlaoshi Thanks for the reply. I think I’m going to use Wix as well - my office uses it, and I’ll be able to get advice! I also do a little bit of work on the office website (not design though). I’ve just bought a domain name. I feel too old for this, but my family seem to think I’ll survive… I tell myself - “Lifelong learning!”

@slmkhoo It’s nice to keep yourself active and challenged
.I would say using Wix is a little similar to working on MS PowerPoint - in the sense that most of the stuffs are drag and drop + WYSIWYG. It should serve your basic needs for a start.

-
@chenlaoshi I’m OK with the text. It’s the design that I’m terrified of - I look at the templates, and I can’t imagine how to adapt them!
-
@slmkhoo I would rather go for Wordpress which is quite user friendly and has thousands of free themes to choose from. There are multiple plugins (also free) that you can use to add ecommerce and payments etc. later on.
-
@coolcat Thanks, but I’ve already done a simple one on Wix. Still battling with fine-tuning it, and I know it’s very amateurish! But I need something by next Sat. If it grows, I’ll hire someone to work on it!
I see various sites which say Wix is easier to use than Wordpress - it Wix is easy, I really don’t want to try anything else! It’s been a struggle.

Building a website in Wix is much easier now that they have an AI https://www.wix.com/ai-website-builder

If you want sales option then go with shopify. Use their one month trial with custom domain. Once you have sales then you can finally go with their subscription. Or if you have some advanced skills then you can use wix or wordpress.
-
I would recommend wix or squarespace, but shopify might be more appropriate for online sales as mentioned by a fellow parent in the thread.

@Mark_81 & Sofia
Thanks for the suggestions. I have a simple website on Wix now. I don’t plan to sell on my website, at least not in the near future so will stick with this for now.
