New L1R4 system for JC entry

I personally feel that taking more subjects at the O level stage does help to build one’s capacity for learning. And now students can afford to take subjects without worrying they need to be included in the L1R4. It remains to be seen how generous and open schools will be to offering kids a wide platter and number of subjects read though.
Yes, I hope that with the way the education system has developed in the 45 yrs since I was in sec school, they will be able to give more flexibility and choice to students. In my school, at the end of sec 2, students were streamed into 6 classes based on their Sec 2 results. 2 classes did 8 subjects, 2 classes did 7, and 2 classes did 6. For the first 4 classes, the whole class would take the same set of subjects; if you wanted to change subjects, you had to change class, and you could only move “down”, not “up”. There was a bit more flexibility in subject choice in the 5th and 6th classes, I think. I hope that kind of rigidity remains well in the past.

If a student only requires L1R4 to qualify for JC, how realistic is the student able to cope in JC science stream coming from potentially a E Math or combined science class? Is MOE dumbing down the A level syllabus? Or is it used to complement the new 3H2 only requirement (H1 syllabus is like a progression from E maths or combined sci in terms of difficulty) so overall reduce stress so students have more time to pursue sports, arts, sustainability or topics of interest?

Currently, if a student takes seven subjects under the L1 R5, he or she would have one backup subject. Apparently, MOE doesn’t see that one backup subject is for student to “explore”. Else we wouldn’t have the new L1R4. The one subject that is taken out to form the new L1R4 is for students to explore, according to MOE. So I don’t think it makes sense after the new L1R4 is introduced, Schools will proceed to reduce total subjects for students. Else it will nullified the 1 subject created for exploration from the new L1R4?

@bbbay
How should current sec 2 parents strategise the sec 3 offerings to be student ready for JC subject combi? To go science in jc, hv to take EL CL A Maths E Maths, pure Chem, one humanities, pure bio or physics or combined sci. No way can anyone take less than 7 subjects to go JC science comfortably right? And cannot just take A maths without E maths right? How is it more stress-free than currently? -
Hi,
I have a question on the bonus points.
Can a student get 3 bonus point from CCA and JC affiliation and get additional 2 bonus points from language elective programme ?

I noticed one strange thing: they have actually tightened up the L1R4 for MI admission. Specifically, where currently the R2 does NOT have to be a Humanities for MI applicants, under the new system it will be.
I wonder if this requirement is too onerous on the students wanting to do Commerce stream in MI…
