Comparing Pre-school English Reading and Phonics Enrichment
-
Hi buds, can advice what is the fee for 1-1 home phonics?
I'm looking for a program to improve my K1's reading. She has been in childcare center and exposed to their Letterland since 18mths old, but now I see no improvement whatsoever. She is very good at recognizing the all the letters and the individual sounds but it stops there... when I do reading with her to sound out the words using phonics, she is totally blank!!
I suspect the teacher just expects them to memorise the words when they are 'reading' in class... I ask her class teacher abt the story for the letter blends to revise with my child for the week, she told me sorry forgot!!
:stupid:
Anyone with good tried-and-tested recommendation for phonics in woodlands, please help. :?:

Wah seh... Terok leh like that.. Once the
children are efficient with the single letter
sounds, they should continue with the
blending for two and three letter words.
Keep the interest alive for Phonics while
its still there. Good that you asked. Well
done! Btw, i have PM-ed you.. Check
your inbox, ya. -
I read and replied your PM…
Yalor, that’s why now so stress… think the teacher really cannot make it… forget woh so dunno how she teach lor… some I ask the story of the blend she doing that same week not like weeks before (which is still not acceptable wat!!) -
Ya… pretty weird and hard to accept.
Makes us wonder if the teacher knows
her skill… -
6 Reading Skills Your Child Needs to Learn

Phonological Awareness

to help your child hear the new sounds that make up words.
12th May 2009
Narrative skills
>Encourage your child to tell stories with you.
>Being able to tell or retell a story helps children understand what
they read.

Personally, i don't really suggest u to have a 1-1, becos it stresses your child more.. I think y not, u put him in a class maybe other learning center for 2 months or so for a trial and see how's ur child progress.RRMummy:

There's a Chiaravalle Montessori in
Vista Point you can check out,
RRMummy..
See if they have small sized classes
during your most convenient time
to bring your girl.. if she can be
assessed to effectively show that
she has mastered the 26 beginning
letter sounds, if they have ongoing
classes... might have chance to slot
your girl in as well, rather than repeat
that part of the introduction all over again.
As long as class is fun and interactive,
regardless of size of the class... the
children will be motivated to learn.
If there are fewer children in the group
and less younger ones mixed in as well,
the group progress can accelerate faster.
Older children can concentrate better and
finish assignments more quickly than a
younger one.. then by K2 your girl can
move up to English/Grammar programmes
to prep her for Primary One. -
Hi wifey_mommy, KSP and Buds, thank you for the recommendations.
Wifey_mommy, actually, I figured maybe 1-1 could help speed up the learning process with personalized attention to cater to my DD1's progress... but still open to other options..
KSP, I called icreative, unfortunately they do not have anymore available slots even until next year!!
Buds, I called Chiaravalle Montessori, they are closed for holidays till next week... will try again...
What do you all think about I Can Read Program? In the meantime, I'm also trying to read more with her at home and using some phonics materials shared by Tamarind... Afraid my kungfu not up to standard and end up short-changing my kid...
and the clock is ticking... :booboo: tick-tock-tick-tock... -

(I'm very sad...) wifey_mommy...
In the line of my duty, there were occasions where parents have
requested for one on one lessons, for many different reasons and
the effectiveness is tremendous as these children cannot conform
to group environments that well. If boss takes them in, i gotta
teach... (i do not have a choice) but the variety i get, is very
interesting. I never regretted being asked to do my assignments.
It has made me grow as a person and challenged myself as a
teacher.. and my lessons are very interactive and extremely FUN,
so i promise no stress at all... :please: far far from stressful...
really! Heheeheee...
Just to share some of the students i was working with..
>Thai boy : Minimal English speaking. Comes to Singapore only
during holidays. Mom wants him to pick up reading and writing in
English asap. Came in for March whole week (5 days), June (20 days),
Sept (5 days) and Nov/Dec (20 days). Such a challenge and a pleasure
to undertake. I've never had to accelerate that fast, boy! T'was an
adrenaline rush. Pressure was more on me to perform rather than
the student.. But i had loads of fun! And the boy was so well-behaved!
So that helped a lot too!
>Mild autism girl : Prone to seizures and fits.. loves being read to and
loves learning languages. Friends don't get how she is, cos she is very
different. The MOST fun by far!! And she was downright adorable.
You wouldn't be able to tell she was autistic cos she was gorgeous!!!
Pressure to perform? Nope, not at all and from both our sides. Results
were extraordinary... another adrenaline rush!
>Mild down-syndrome girl : You can tell when you see her, but she has
pride. Doesn't like to be stared at by friends and... OTHER PARENTS! :!:
Lovely mannered girl. Has occasional tantrums and outbursts. The
pressure? For me : Mum wants to take her out of special school. My
role - to make her speak, read and write as quickly and as normally
as any normal child. The result? Very heart-warming... The sweet girl
flourished when she was able to show what she was great at in her
own environment. Extremely chatty and loves reading and being read
to. T'was challenging to reduce the deep hollow sounds from her, due
to the hearing problem (she uses the hearing aide) and get her to
pronounce the sound as clear as she can. She was determined to make
it work for her and to make her mummy proud... P1... managed to get
through into normal mainstream primary school.
Stammering girl : Laughed at by friends. No luck with speech therapist.
Low self confidence. Hid further in her shell. Refuse to speak. Child
felt pressure to perform and wud hardly wanna say anything at all.
Results : Patient and loving parents proved the most understanding
way for the girl to get her confidence back... Pressure on me? Not
much, cos the parents were FANTASTIC people. Most likely reason
for the stammering was, mum went back to work full time in a bank,
no longer had much time for her, mum preggie with 2nd child, daddy
had mild stammering when younger but overcame it. Worst still... old
maid sent back 24hrs (for many accumulated reasons), new one was
in the same day...
Normal boy and girl : K2 in mth of August. Parents realised they cud
not read. At all. Thought the school did. Parents point fingers at sch
and one another. Bo pian (No choice)... immediate intervention. The
pressure? Both our sides! Both must perform! Less than 4mths to P1!
Pulling hair!!! Came for more intensive private lessons. Result? Me &
the kids gasping for breath! Too much adrenaline rush... More to high
blood pressure! Wuahahahaa!
So my take, one-on-one or 2-by-2, small group... big group... don't
last minute, hor.. teacher very stress.. parents push for results...
more stress... An effective instructor will make lessons interesting
and engaging! They are out there! Recce for places early if you
already know you will need to engage such services or enrichment
lessons for your child.
Start cultivating love for language early... not so much on emphasizing
must learn phonics, must memorise readers, must everything.... Start
early - read to your child every day. Don't miss. If you miss, must feel
guilty!! Never under-estimate the importance of reading to your child...
It really does work. Works for me... i had the best mum who in her
lack of English knowledge wud still read to me story after story, every
day, without fail and investing in whatever money she had been given
from dad (she is a full-time mum and never went out to work her entire
life... only till lately - for pleasure and to stay active with old age) for
classic Ladybird stories and readers. To mum : Thank you is never
enough for what you have showered us with...
Did Phonics work for me?
Heck! I didn't even know
what that was in my time..
Neither did my mumsie..
I checked.
